It takes all kinds

I know I shouldn't feel this way. I mean being surprised by this seems a bit silly, yet I still am flabbergasted by the sheer amount of misinformation that people spread as gospel.

Ok, yes, once upon a time, in a new frontier, these things came in handy to know. Rules to live by to help you stay safe and sane. But things changed. New pioneers challenged the status quo and proved that these rules were not always the full truth.

Remember when tomatoes were a poison? Of course not, you had people that proved that little ditty wrong. The leaves can make you sick, and the plant itself is a night shade. But the fruit is edible. So not the full truth.

Eggs, a floating egg doesn't mean it is rotten, it means that it is older, that the membrane has shrunk slightly allowing for more air, hence it's ability to float. Someone, somewhere decided to crack the "bad" egg open and decide for themselves. They found that it wasn't the full truth when it came to eggs. Yet people still practice this. All one needs to do is crack the egg open in a small dish. It will tell you instantly that the egg is edible or not. What is that old adage, waste not want not?

Corn has no nutritional value. . .
Grass has no benefits, better to replace it with edibles. . .
Brown or green eggs have more cholesterol. . .
Nitrates are unnatural. . .
Sugar causes hyperactivity. . .

Oh the list can go on. And daily the media tells us another half truth to scare the bejeebers out of us. Popcorn, apples, steak, fish. . .etc. . . Evil death!!!! Then social media and people we trust to be experts twist and spin, fit the half truth into their utopia (I don't care for onions so watch my Facebook page for misquotes and mislabeled scientific studies so I can get more people to shun the raw onion. It can only be cooked in this certain manner to be safe)

It all can get so confusing. Too many voices. It's hard to trust the info out there. Once upon a time I would receive hate mail, grossly out of context comments, and critical reviews of posts I would write. One thing was, I have certain rules to follow to keep my readers safe and keep legal liabilities at bay. So I would be attacked on saying things like, I do not recommend. . . And here is the case study. . . Warning potentially fatal. . . And I had so many people threatening to turn me in to PETA for my posts on butchering that I actually waited for them. I got into an argument with someone about beans being a fruit or vegetable. My view was a stance on cooking. But that is beside the point.

I guess my point being, take everything with a grain of salt (while salt is still legal). If something doesn't sound copacetic, do a bit of research on your own. You may find half truths.

Guess I am just getting cynical and frustrated with my old age.

I think a lot of the mis-information that goes around is spread because some people just ENJOY getting confrontational with other people. As if by challenging someone else's data with some other data and making that person seem ignorant increases the other persons' intelligence.

On a totally different and unrelated note, how is the move going?

Bad thing is...so many folks believe whatever they are told!

Guess that common sense is almost a thing of the past!

I go with my gut... I eat what tastes good to me, or what I can afford. Mushrooms, well, yes, of course they are rotten, poisonous stuff...

Remember the 'shortage' of pork they were claiming a couple months back? Guess what. There was a trade 'deal' made with El Salvadore. Beginning in March, butchered pork will begin shipping from that country.

Now - if any of you don't know, other countries are not regulated anywhere near the extreme choking that this country's food growers endure.

Remember when eggs were bad for you? And then they were good. Same with milk.

The crap being dished out is nothing more than a means for making room to introduce something else off the wall, behind the curtain on the stage where our government continues to bow to its audience, expecting kudos for nothing more than, "but it looks good.. don't it!"

But we keep voting blooming idiots into places where they should never belong.

I have been saying for many years to my family that nutrition is a BS "science". Every few years the rules change completely. One time they say that breads and grains are good for you, now they say they are toxic, then they say low carb diets are bad, then high carb diets are bad, then vegetarian diets are unhealthy, so basically, nothing is good for you. It's just plain crazy. I decided to try to grow as much of my own produce as possible in the tiny garden I have and read every single label to see what the country of origin is where the food comes from. I try to avoid anything from outside of the USA as much as possible because like WeldrBrat said, other countries don't have the safety standards we have here. and finally, we try to eat everything in moderation and try to stay away from processed foods as much as we can. It just seems like food shopping is getting harder and taking longer than it should.

Wait, what happened to prompt this post? (You don't really have to answer, but I am curious). Wait, let me guess - someone is spouting off gouts of negativity about your plans, yes? Ignore the bs. I agree with Carolyn that a lot of folks get a thrill from hearing their own voices.

Take care,
parker

Hah! It's amazing what will set people off, especially when it comes to internet readers.

It is very difficult to know what's what. Personally, I don't believe half of what the FDA tells me, as they have close ties with the largest food producers in the nation.

The problem is that while some things are easy to disprove (floating eggs) others have scientists and doctors on both sides of an issue (animal fats, HF corn syrup, etc) which makes it doubly difficult to figure out who to listen to.
