"Whole Foods Market permanently surrenders to Monsanto"

For those googling. . .No, Whole Foods is not owned by Monsanto

WFM and most of the largest organic companies have deliberately separated themselves from anti-GMO efforts and cut off all funding to campaigns working to label or ban GMOs. The so-called GMO-Free Project, funded by Whole Foods and giant wholesaler United Natural Foods (UNFI) is basically a greenwashing effort to show that certified organic foods are basically free from GMOs (we already know this since GMOs are banned in organic production), while failing to focus on so-called "natural" foods, which constitute most of WFM and UNFI's sales and are routinely contaminated with GMOs.

From their "business as usual" perspective, successful lawsuits against GMOs filed by public interest groups such as the Center for Food Safety; or noisy attacks on Monsanto by groups like the Organic Consumers Association, create bad publicity, rattle their big customers such as Wal-Mart, Target, Kroger, Costco, Supervalu, Publix and Safeway; and remind consumers that organic crops and foods such as corn, soybeans, and canola are slowly but surely becoming contaminated by Monsanto's GMOs. . . . . . .

Approximately 2/3 of the products sold by Whole Foods Market and their main distributor, United Natural Foods (UNFI) are not certified organic, but rather are conventional (chemical-intensive and GMO-tainted) foods and products disguised as "natural.

I'm. . . well. . . speechless.

Why do you say they surrender to Monsanto? Just curious as there are several companies that produce GMO's and Monsanto is the smallest of them all.

Monsanto, Dow, Bayer, Syngenta, BAS are some of the GMO players. The title of this post is a quote from the article.

Monsato provides the technology for 90% of the world's genetically engineered seeds. After the purchase of Seminis Seed Monsanto became the Largest conventional seed company.

No surprise, they must be spending more than they are making on the anit GMO campaign and when all this sort of company truly cares about is $$$.... well?

Personally I stear clear of large corps such as WFM and search out the smaller stores truly trying to educate people on the poisons they are consuming and in turn they direct those people to more local markets.

Pretty sad since Whole Foods has pretty much stomped out all the smaller natural foods stores.

It was bound to happen though, all these companies care about is the bottom line.

Boy am I glad there is a thriving Co-op, Farmer's Market and tons of local organic farms where I'm currently living! "We the people" direct what is produced, due to what we purchase and what actions we take, such as growing our own food. It is up to us as individuals to decide what we eat.

Since you're in Kansas (?) -- understand that there is a difference between the national "Whole Foods Market" and the local (to Wichita and surrounding area) "Whole Foods" stores. The local stores are locally/regionally owned by a gal that was originally from Oklahoma. The Whole Foods Market (they don't use the whole name in this article, I don't think) is what they are talking about here. Most people don't realize there are two that use that name.

The Local one is Whole Foods Association, which is different than the Whole Foods Market which the story is about.

Still if I was the owner of WFA I would b sure to make sure every one knows the difference.

The only problem though, Parker is that with the new food safety bill they just passed (S.510), the government will soon begin to come in and regulate (i.e., interfere with) the independent farming families - people who sell at the farmer's markets.

They will be able to come in and tell families how to grow their crops and mandate that anything sold to the public must be "treated" for food safety.

That carefully tended garden? those heirloom seeds that you ordered from Seed Savers? that plot of grain you started to feed your animals? GONE! GONE! when the farmer down the road plants Monsanto or any other BIG company GMO crop and the wind blows it's pollen onto your crop and cross contaminates your "heirloom" seeds so they are not heirloom anymore...and then, THEN! someone comes to take a sample of your crop and sues you for planting GMO "protected" seeds! Monsanto and any other GMO company will own the wind...it will soon be "Monsanto Nature"...because there will be no protection for us little guys...

This article? shows how monetary our country has become...the withdrawal of the monetary means to fight a genetic monstrosity has just been withdrawn! IT IS MONUMENTAL!

The "Whole Foods" of America? can spend their new found wealth on veggies and fruits grown to be pleasing to the eye, not their health...and us "homesteaders" can cover everything we grow in plastic so we can be free to eat what we want, as an AMERICAN should! Imagine...gardening in a bubble cuz that is what we are going to have to do!

I am NOT speechless Phelan, I am outraged! Again? the almighty dollar has usurped America's right to choose...I have never eaten a George or a Ben...I wonder if they taste good or are they just pleasing to the eye?
