Monsanto Takes Center for Food Safety Legal Victory to Highest Court

From The Center of Food Safety;

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to hear a first-time case about the risks of genetically engineered crops. Named Monsanto v. Geertson Seed Farms, No. 09-475, the case before the high court will be yet another step in an ongoing battle waged by the Center for Food Safety to protect consumers and the environment from potentially harmful effects of genetically engineered (GE) crops. The modified alfalfa seed at the heart of the dispute has been engineered to be immune to Monsanto’s flagship herbicide Roundup. Monsanto intervened in a 2007 federal district court ruling that the Department of Agriculture’s approval of GE alfalfa was illegal. The Center for Food Safety (CFS) filed a 2006 lawsuit on behalf of a coalition of non-profits and farmers who wished to retain the choice to plant non-GE alfalfa. CFS was victorious in this case – in addition CFS has won two appeals by Monsanto in the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit: in 2008 and again in 2009. Now, upon Monsanto’s insistence, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case.

A 2009 study showed that the use of genetically modified crops, the vast majority Monsanto’s “roundup ready” crops, has caused over the last 13 years a dramatic increase in herbicide use, by 383 million pounds, and concomitant harms to the environment and human health.

The U.S. Department of Justice has undertaken an investigation of Monsanto regarding violations of anti-trust and monopoly laws and is set to hold public hearings in spring 2010.

Another 2009 study showed that, despite decades of promises and hype, GE crops do not increase yields

Monsanto's Newest Problem

You need to read this post over on Freedom Food.

Turns out that 3 of their Approved GMO corn has now been linked to organ damage in mammals.

I said it before. When you mess with nature you have no idea what monster you will create.

I wonder what will turn up with their terminator seed. Mass sterilizations?

Good Morning

I am at a loss for words this morning. Have had a migraine for 2 days. Guess I am a bit tired.

I need to find some Skullcap seeds for the herb garden. All the seed catalogs I get don't sell it. That and peppercorn seeds. Does any one have a supplier they trust that sells these items? Thanks in advance.

I think today I need to restock on my pasta stash. Spend the day making and drying out noodles. Although it is suppose to be warmer today, and I can get outside and do some chores. I guess I will decide that when the sun finally comes up.

Other than that, I hope every one has a great weekend. And if you are itching to can something, why not bread or cakes?

This Woman just won't stop talking!

Seriously, she babbles more then a running brook.

Blah blah blah

Podcast interview with some woman named Phelan.

and she screams into the phone. make it stop!!!!!!

There is a delay between what the interviewer says and when the interviewee hears it This Phelan chick seems uncomfortable with it, and laughs inappropriately.

Tired of the 3rd person talk yet, or shall Phelan go on?

Honestly, I haven't listened to it.

Warmer Shoes

Morning chores are done, just trying to warm up a bit. However it is warmer today than yesterday. so that's a plus.

I am wondering if things in my community are worse then we feared or being reported. Why am I thinking that?

First I got a mass email from the principal of two of my sons school. The email asked if we would go through are closets and pull out shoes that our children may have out grown. The letter states that he has already done this and gave the shoes to a child there that needed them.

Next I received a note from the teacher. They are asking that we send shoes to school so that the new gym floor stays nice. The note says that the shoes do not need to be new, just free of debris. If buying new shoes, don't spend more than $20, and if you need help purchasing shoes to let her know and that they will help.

Shoes, shoes for kids. It makes me wonder about things.

Next, I was talking with the electric company collections officer, and I just happened to catch a glimpse at his who to collect from list. Normally it is a relatively small list, but this time it had at least 100 people, if not more. He was out warning these people that their power would be turned off as soon as the overnight temperatures reach over 32F. He likes my cows and will stop and chat when he sees us out.

I am concerned about my community, and what could be happening to it. And I'm not sure what I can do to help. We aren't fairing much better than most of these people, but at least we are not drowning .. . any more

Feeling Better

Was feeling a little sickly the past couple of days. I must have looked awful because husband took over my duties on Sunday and allowed me to nap.

Husband has been thinking about some things that will benefit us when we go off grid. He has a plan. And from what he is saying, it sounds like it and everything will work out beautifully. Sometimes it's nice living with an engennering genius slash doctor slash motorcycle builder. Conversation get rather interesting here at times. I will tell you all about the project as they happen.

He is actually getting excited about this whole farmstead project. Before he was hesitant about it, one of the reasons we were out last year like planned. But I think some issues he was having have been settled. And he is golden about it now.

I had a podcast interview with the Kentucky Prepper, Matthiasj last night. I am offically a rambling fool. Just to let you know. He said it will be available to listen Thursday. I will let you guys know if you are interested in listening. It is pretty much a get to know me session. I enjoyed it.

Has anyone heard about the Crow Creek Tribe? I just heard about this. Apparently the tribe owed back taxes since 2003, and the IRS came in a snagged 7 thousand + acres of ancestral and treaty given land from them. I saw it on Indian Country News, but can't find anything in the main stream media about it. This feels wrong, very wrong.

So today it is the same ole same ole mundane work. Got a question be sure to ask, it will give me something different to do.
