Eating Out(side) A personal challenge

Jelly. . .jelly. . . jelly. . . SALAD!

I think we are much more than jellies and salads. But when it comes to edible flowers and weeds, that's what we do, jelly and salad. Oh sure once in awhile we throw a wrench into the machine and make a butter.

And add injury to insult, I have found myself in a food rut. After my dad died, I just don't have the passion for cooking I once had. Use to be that at least once a week, Husband or the boys would walk in while I was cooking and ask what was for dinner. "experiment" I would answer. Oh how I miss the moans of discontent. Rarely did one of my experimental meals turn out to be yucky.

Husband and I were talking the other day, well we were laughing the other day, about my issues with fancy restaurants, and how I belittled more than one in house chef because of the poor quality octopus or their microwaved fettuccine Alfredo that was way too expensive. I was harder on over priced chefs than the food critics I knew. But that came from the passion that my father instilled in me. The perfection of blends, flavors, and spices. No one got away with serving me a $40 plate of Chef Boyardee. I miss "fancy" foods. And have fell into the mundane menus that would make most children happy.

I have decided that I have been in mourning long enough. I have decided to take up a personal challenge. . .

Eating out (side) a personal challenge

Once a week I will make an experimental meal. The main ingredient must be a wild flower or weed that is in season. It can not be a jelly, butter, syrup, salad or candy. It must be on par with the gourmet restaurants, but easily made in home. And not have expensive ingredients to hide or cover the weeds.

I have already worked out the first meal.

Oh Phelan, I have been reading your recipes for years now...you are not white trash! you ARE a gourmet chef! I love your ingenuity and your "experiments"! I am so glad your MOJO has returned!

oh Lisa, I am so white trash, minus the NASCAR. I don't know if my cooking mojo is back, I just need to get back to doing what I enjoy.

Now you says you have been reading my recipes, have you made any? ;)

Looking forward to the experiments! I'm always looking for something different. Even if I don't do exactly the same, the inspiration is appreciated!

That is awesome. Keep us posted. I might have to research stuff in my region and give this a shot!

I've got lots of natural/wild growth in my yard that you are welcome to experiment with!

If you come across a recipe for goat heads please share.

A gentleman who delivered oats took a tour around our backyard and pointed out many wild and edible plants. It was very interesting. I wish I took notes. One plant that hard to rid once established produces little berries that taste like nuts. They were good.

I planted extra day lilies last year, they didn't bloom but this year should be a smorgasboard! LOL! I love your day lily recipes, well, I will! cuz your pottage? is one of my daily intakes! YUM! along with braised spinach which, I didn't like spinach til I grew my own last year and tried yours! NOW, row upon row grew last year and will again this year! I never have saffron to put in it..seems to be rare here. Now that I am no longer driving truck and actually have a kitchen? I will be lurking you to death! My neighbors seem to think I am also white trash but wait til they see my day lily brunches on my front porch...courtesy of the white trash in Kansas...

I can't wait to see what you will come up with!

Hey, white trash is the backbone of America! You know why? Because we're the survivors! No one pays our way, no one gives us special privileges. Everything we have, we work hard for. If this country gets attacked or the economy gets any worse, we're the ones who will make it through, not the spoiled yuppies in expensive suits. Be proud, white trash! LOL

Alex please let me know if you do.

Kimberly, make an extract out of the young leaves. It will increase your libido :D

Lisa :D

Kath, I am proud! :D
