You should thank the FDA

The FDA just raided a potential murders home. He had bio weapons of mass destruction. It's a good thing too, I mean without the FDA, who would tell us what is good for us? It's not like they are in the pockets of anyone. Besides the Amish and raw milk producers are evil and plotting to take over the world!

Thanks Kelle for the heads up on this.

Feds invade farm for 5 a.m. inspection

Federal agents invaded an Amish farm in Pennsylvania at 5 a.m. to inspect cow-milking facilities then followed up the next day with a written notice that the farmer was engaged in interstate sale of raw milk in violation of the Public Health Services Act.

A failure to correct the situation could result in "seizure and/or injunction," the warning letter from Kirk Sooter, district director of the Philadelphia office of the Department of Health and Human Services, told farmer Dan Allgyer of Kinzer, Pa., on Wednesday.

The farm invaded Tuesday is the one agents visited in February, driving past "Private Property" signs to demand Allgyer open his property for their inspection, saying, "You have cows. You produce food for human consumption."

The case is being publicized by the National Independent Consumers and Farmers Association, which promotes traditional methods of linking farmers with consumers.

Spokeswoman Deborah Stockton told WND Allgyer "is the type of farmer who exemplifies what we are trying to restore." On her organization's website is the commitment "to promote and preserve unregulated direct farmer-to-consumer trade that fosters availability of locally grown or home-produced food products."

She reported she got details directly from Allgyer of Tuesday's early morning inspection, which highlights the growing conflict between farmers who want to provide health food locally and federal regulators.

Allgyer could not be reached immediately for comment.

This just makes me furious. Where will it all end? The government is creeping into all our lives from every angle. Heck they aren't even creeping in anymore.... they just barge right in. GRRRRRRRRRRRR

Well I'v gotta say that I have a lot of mixed feelings about this. Minor point===raiding a dairy at five in the morning is not a big deal, the farmer has probably already been up and working for a couple of hours so it's not like they came in and jerked him out of bed. I agree with you that government should keep it's nose and hand out of out business and pocket book. However what about the unscrupulous one in a hundred that decides to cut a few corners for a little more profit and makes a lot of people sick, or even kills a few, how do you prevent that other than having all the customers go to the farm and inspect it before they buy anything. Even then how does the average non farmer know what to look for?

Bob, truth be told, I don't get up to 530 am. So raiding my farm at 5am is not "normal business hours" for my little farm.

In my State, raw milk is considered a buyer beware product. It is up to the consumer to do their research, and decide. If they do get sick, the state Ag dept is contacted, then the farm is inspected, not raided, and they determine if things are bad or if this was an isolated case.

In is a thought of 1 bad apple spoiling the bunch. Raw milk should be legal in fed land so that it can be inspected yearly just like other producers are.

Bob - It states in the article that 'Allgyer previously had told the officers that as a private farmer, he does not sell to the public.'
So why does the warrant and agents state 'We have credible evidence that you are involved in interstate commerce'
This seems to me that he milks his cows and uses the milk for his family and they are after him for that. I do know that there are a lot of Amish Farmers Markets in South Jersey that Amish farmers from near Philadelphia work with, but when I go to them there is no raw milk available at all. I have tried to find it but can't in NJ. Raw milk is legal in Pennsylvania. If he is not selling across state line then how is this interstate commerce?
This seems to me just another Big Brother attack on the farmer.
Makes me sick to think that the Amish are getting hit when they have standards that they set that are higher than the government. Their family uses this milk so you know they will take care of their cows.

This is my first visit... I wandered over here form another blog and this post grabbed my attention for personal reasons. I have first-hand experience with an FDA raid (on a nutrirional supplement business) and I think of the FDA and the IRS in the same vein as the Gestapo. Not pretty. Whatever good they were intended to do has been obscured by power-hungry politics that are enforced by goons. With a large heap of dung tossed into the mix. Can you tell this is a sore spot for me? Harumph. I dont' talk about it because it raises my blood pressure big time.
