I refuse

Come take me to jail now. You know where I live.

If you think that I will be forced, coerced, or frightened into buying into your program. You are wrong.

I know that you will threaten to take my children. I know you will threaten to take my livelihood. We have ways around all that ourselves.

I will not be purchasing your health insurance.

I didn't have a choice in life. My mother made that choice. Once my brain developed and I learned on an intellectual level what life meant, I decided I liked it. And I choose to continue to go on. I will not kill myself, it isn't like car insurance.

I was raised in a very liberal household. What ever happened to the mantra of my body, my choice? Are you that hypocritical. Do you think the working poor are so stupid that they have to be saved? Or that's right, you are. It isn't their fault.

My father had health insurance for us when we were children. That was a part of the perks of getting a good job. I left home, and had no insurance. And the thing I find out is that if you have some money to give up to the hospital you go to, they tend to reduce bills and give you payment plans that actually fit your budget.

My husband worked hard. Earned a job with health insurance as a perk. We have been without it for two years. We set money aside in case of an emergency. And our doctor is one of those rare breeds that doesn't except health insurance in any form. Cash or check.

I refuse to drink the kool-aide, as so many are putting it. I refuse to buy into this. I will not pay your fines on principal.

I am prepared to go to jail.

Hear! Hear! Me, too!

I'm so angry about this. Every article I've read and every poll I've seen shows that the MAJORITY of the population is AGAINST this legislation, and they still passed it. Whatever happened to "by the People and for the People." If we don't want it, how can they, in good conscience, pass it?

You and me both! Mad, angry, pissed just don't fit how I feel.

Wendy, the people you speak of don't have a conscience, they are evil and have an agenda for the NWO. They like Obama are just puppets, the puppet masters is who "We the People" need to find and deal with.

At the demonstration in DC one black gentleman was quated as repeatedly saying Black didn't vote Obama in the whites did, see where the blame shifts to? *sigh*

You might want to read/study this issue further Phelan. I can assure you they aren't going to do anything so drastic as to arrest you or threaten to take your children. :D

The subsidies the hospitals give you [i.e. "they tend to reduce bills and give you payment plans that actually fit your budget.] for being working poor are the same that the government is offering in order to have health insurance - so it is basically the same thing, right?

Please don't misunderstand me - We don't like being TOLD we have to have this but considering the size of your family -5 people- and your take home pay [I am assuming it is under the limit of 85,000 dollars from what you have said on your blog] you probably won't pay anything to be insurance or it will be a token fee.

Anyway - all my points may be moot in a few months because although it passed yesterday it may not get through the Senate. We will have to wait and see.

[We're still friends, right? Hope so. Just trying to give another spin to this junk :D]

Amen, Sister! I personally know NO ONE, liberal or conservative, who wanted this. Many past administrations have been taking baby steps towards socialization. This is a giant step. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear people say that health care is a "right". What? Everyone has the "right" to be, to pursue happiness...I don't recall ever reading that Americans have the right to receive free heath care, which in turn will penalize a huge number of people with higher taxes. I'm sure Cap & Trade will be the next atrocity to be forced down our throats. Then the America that our forefathers fought and died for will surely be dead.

st another example of th PTB deciding what's good for us! Wonder what part of "stay out of my life" they don't understand?

Thanks for such a timely post!

Skippymom, of course we are still friends. I am not so petty that I can't be friends with someone that doesn't agree with me.

The reason I get discounts are because I pay cash, I do not have to pay the extras that get charged through insurance companies.

They are hiring something like 17,000 new IRS workers, just to push buying the insurance. I will have to go check the source again, and will post the story for you.

I choose to go to the Catholic ran hospitals here in Kansas. There are State subsidies involved, yes, but I and my husband pay into these every paycheck. Over our working lives we have paid more into the programs then we have ever pulled out.

And I beilive that they will try to take my children away under neglect laws. If I refuse to have my children insured, they will see it as medical neglect.

And this isn't just about health insurance. It is the fact that they forced this vote through. It shouldn't have passed under normal rules. And they aren't listening to the people. We pay them, they are our employees, we tell them what to do for us. The majority of the people (not the majority of those in office) are to be the victors. They ignored this and us.

Forgot to mention. Yes I do make under $85,000 a year. However we have made that plus before, and I plan on making it again. I do not plan to be poor forever. I have goals and dreams. And I am a capitalist pig.

SkippyMom said...

Phelan we don't make close to 85K and I don't consider us poor either.

As I said, I am not happy being told to do something [I want a choice, y'know?] but not everyone in the US disagrees with this being passed.

I just like the fact that people making over 250K are going to FINALLY be taxed at a rate comprable to the rest of us because that is the money they are going to use to help fund this.

I certainly know you aren't petty :D - I just wanted you to know I wasn't being snarky or anything just trying to put a different spin on it for you - and you can bet your boots they will have to shoot me dead if they think they are getting Wallene if I won't / can't get this insurance - but it is still years away - I think Pooldad told me it would be 2014 before this is even implemented. IF it passes.

Phelan said...

yes, 2014 is when it goes into effect. By then I plan on making that $85k a year. If the world doesn't end by then. ;)

I realize that not everybody feels this is a bad bill, but then not everyone has even read it, including your reps. Our State has great programs, and I support my Sates plan, and pay into it with out complaint.

But the majority of voting US citizens say they don't wan this particular bill. We, the majority, make the rules. I know it sucks when you are in the minority. But these are the rules. We play by them, and so should they. Since they aren't going to play straight, then neither will I.

As poor, I will not take a free handout. I work hard to get what I have. I pay people back if I burrow something or pass it along.

When I am no longer poor, I will make my choices based on what I feel is right in my family.

My Body My choice!

The new mantra for the pissed off taxpayer. :D

i live in massachusetts so we have had mandatory health care for a few years now. what it has done has given all the poor free health care--before that a hospital could refuse to treat them and they did. the requirements for payments are very low--if you don't make a certain low amount you qualify for free care...it's pretty simple...

last week i had to go to the emergency room with what appeared to be a heart attack. once i was stabilized i had a bunch of tests, etc. my bill was over $20,000 for less than 24 hours....that's a lot of money to save up....we have health insurance with a very high deductible so will have to pay for a fair share of that but not all of it. we are glad we have insurance. if i had needed surgery it would have been twice that. fortunately my breast cancer care was mostly covered, too, because that would have cost us our house and more.

my mother's cancer cost over $500,000....that's a whole lot of money to save up. i agree most of us can pay for a broken leg but what about my friend who got a brain tumor, had over $100,000 worth of care, no insurance and lost his house, car, everything to pay the bills....??? He now has free health care but it came too late to save his home and he lives in a friend's basement.

i understand that you don't want to be told what to do but many people would like to have insurance that can't afford it. is this bill the answer? probably not. but it has opened up a countrywide conversation and debate which is a good thing. in my humble opinion.

and it is still a free country. use your votes and your voices.

I have never been turned away because I didn't have insurance. And I don't know a single person that has ever been turned away. I find it interesting that people claim this, but maybe because our hospitals are ran by the Catholic church. Maybe that is the difference.

I have a pre-existing condition that will kill me, we just don't know when it will do it. And I have never been denied health insurance because of this.

The States are responsible for their people. Leave it to the States to help their poor. And don't force me into buying something.

My last hospital bill was for the delivery of small, it cost me a little over $20,000. No health insurance. And I was there 3 days.

Here they can not take your personal property over health costs. Once again, it should be left to the states.

This bill is not the answer. There were other things that could have been done. All were ignored by the majority in office. I am all about health insurance reform, not what this bill is.

I won't go into the thick and thin of it, but just a note re: the 2014 date: The bulk of the proposed *benefits* of the bill don't start till 2014. The taxes, fees and cuts start up much sooner, all part of the smoke and mirrors assembled to make the bill appear to cost less over the first 10 years than it actually will in once in operation. The "deficit reduction" figures that the CBO figured is *assuming* a lot of cost savings, service cuts and taxes that the Congressional leadership proposed, but has yet to enact.

Good times ahead of us for sure!

Have you guys seen this by chance?

Effective April 16, Walgreens drugstores across the state won't take any new Medicaid patients, saying that filling their prescriptions is a money-losing proposition — the latest development in an ongoing dispute over Medicaid reimbursement.

The company, which operates 121 stores in the state, will continue filling Medicaid prescriptions for current patients.

In a news release, Walgreens said its decision to not take new Medicaid patients stemmed from a "continued reduction in reimbursement" under the state's Medicaid program, which reimburses it at less than the break-even point for 95 percent of brand-name medications dispensed to Medicaid patents.

The entire article can be found on the Seattle Times.

VADutchman is correct! Is there anyone who would buy a car (or house, etc.) with credit but agree to not take possession of the car until it was paid for? This is what our government expects, er...COMMANDS that we do. An email from my dad today: "I was not quite eight years old April 12, 1945 and did not comprehend why my seventy-one year old Grandmother went to her knees and kissed the ground that day -- the day Franklin D. Roosevelt died. Now at age seventy-two I totally understand. I will probably not be of this world the day Barrack Hussein Obama follows FDR into the halls of infamy, but if I were, I too would be on my knees with my lips to the sweet earth." Harsh? I'm sure some would say that. I just hear a senior citizen in mourning for his country.

Just a note to Skippy Mom...just because it might sound good to some does not give the right to the government to ignore the Constitution no matter how "good for the people" it may seem at the time...at the point we're told by the government what we HAVE to buy and they require information about our private health Or Else, it's no longer a free society.

Oh dang :( I posted earlier in the day, found a few spelling goofs I was going to change, ended up deleting the whole post, so went back to repost and now it's not here...one of those days!!

Anyway, Phelan, just wanted to say YOU ROCK SISTER!!!! We agree completely.

This is unconstitutional. It won't stand. It takes from our individual liberties. Many states are already making plans to sue. I don't think it will be around very long.

Mary Richmond said...

Phelan--People are turned away from hospitals all the time, especially in big cities. This didn't used to be so but has become relatively common in the last 20 years. Also, in most states, a hospital can file a lien against your personal property and they do. If you go to a church run hospital, that may be different and that's a good thing. I personally am appalled that anyone in need would be turned away for anything!

As I said before, I don't think this bill is the answer to a very large health care problem but getting a debate started can only be a good thing....

Phelan said...

Mary, I live near a large city. And have lived in the city before. Still not something I have heard of here. Not that it doesn't happen, it just isn't a common occurrence here.

Once again, States are different. We have State run programs here to help the poor. many free clinics/ low cost, with volunteer doctors.

Someone yesterday said that although this was a very flawed bill, that it was a step in the right direction. I disagree. Deeply flawed bills should never become law. Starting a discussion is great, but not at the cost of our lives.

Mary Richmond said...

Phelan--I hear you. I do. And, I personally know a woman who survived a stroke this year, who then lost her job because she was in the hospital and her insurance, who had her house sold out from under her to pay her bills and who is now in a crummy state nursing home waiting to die. She is 50....this happened because she was alone and no one knew what had happened to her until it was too late--she had no family to look out for her and things didn't get filed, etc. on time...this is ridiculous and unconscionable and never should have happened but it did.

i also know someone with cancer who has no more insurance money to pay his bills with and who will probably now die because he can no longer get treatment because there was a cap on his insurance. is this right? he worked hard all his life...he doesn't deserve this.

if this bill does address the caps on insurance payments and the fact that no one should be denied care, i'm okay with that.

and again, i hear you about the deep flaws....

i think we agree that we are in a very deep mess here in the US and personally I would like to see us all sit down and address the issues without blaming and getting upset. even though blame and upset may be okay to discuss away from the mediation table, solving a problem needs a calm mind and willingness to help, i think....in the end i think we all want something that is fair. we don't want children to die because their parents can't afford care and we don't want old people put out on the street because their insurance has been used up. right?

i really don't have any answers because the health and insurance issues are way bigger than i am. there is a lot of fraud, a lot of back slapping and favor swapping and a lot of price guaging as far as i can tell....and.... i don't want innocent, hard working people to suffer because they happen to be down on their luck and sick just because someone else is a cheat and a scammer....
