Gettin' Ready

I have been packing up all my glass bottle and unused canning jars. I normally keep them in the cabinets, but husband and I decided that we might as well start packing for the move. I have already down-sized the amount of stuff we have, now it is starting to get harder to get rid of things.

My younger brother will be going into surgery soon. He was snowboarding, and managed to break his upper arm (above elbow). He works up near Grandby Colorado at a resort. They shipped him down to Denver where the ER wrapped his arm and gave him some pills and sent him on his way. Luckily Little brother has a friend that just happens to be a Doctor, and went to see him. Turns out the break is much more severe then the ER wanted to admit. It was obviously broken in two, but it is moving so freely (yes, it had popped out of his skin) that he shouldn't have been let out, shouldn't be walking around, and they will need to preform surgery to set it and he will need some nerve damage repair done as well.

I would think if I had A BONE THAT POPPED OUT OF MY SKIN [did I read that right?] that I would demand not to be released...c'mon - no hospital is going to allow a person with a compound fracture [where the bone breaks the skin] to walk with a wrap and pills.

I wish your brother the best. Interesting story.

Good luck with the move too.

I thought that as well. Why would they release him? From what I understand this isn't unusual. They wrapped him up, told him that gravity would heal it, no cast, gave him some major pain meds and told him to call the surgeon on Monday. He immediately called his friend after getting released. The doctor said that the releasing thing was normal for his described fracture, but had him come into his office anyway. Saw that it was much worse then what he thought, and are scheduling to see a specialist and a surgery. I haven't heard anything for a couple days, so not sure what's up now.

I really wish I was making it all up.

Sounds like something out of a horror movie...!

What ever happened to "care for the injured"? Guess it doesn't apply anymore...or at least, not as far as making sure the patient is going to be alright!

Hope he is doing OK...!

I am so sad to hear about your brother - hospitals are a scary place! Let us know when you hear more.

Our neighbor, an elderly lady, fell and broke her upper arm in 5 places, so of the breaks actually slide past one another but she too was told gravity, no cast, and the bones would congel together and they did!She didn't have any nerve damage and doesn't sound as bad as your brothers. She does have a bit shorter arm length( nothing noticable) and a lumb where it al healed into a mass. I thought this was some wierd deal because they only have medicare and already owe a tidy sum to the hospital and still think that plays a large part of how she was treated.

Be sure what they gave him for pain pills, typically it's Oxcycodone and he can become adicted if not careful.

If this healthcare bill passes, look for this sort of treatment and worse.

That's scary. Speaks of the competence of that particular ER at least. I hope your brother heals quickly and well and hopefully the hospital does a better job with the surgery than the ER did with evaluating the problem in the first place.

Hey! How wierd. The same kind of thing happened to me when I was in the Army and then they later had to rebreak it twice and put in all sorts of hardware and remove a lot of damaged tissue. Then they they had to cut open my bicep and bury my nerve in it to try to fix the nerve damage. I hope he has better luck with his than I have with mine. I had 5 surgeries. I also couldn't believe anyone could be so negligent, but you'd be surprised how often it happens. Tell him I'm pulling for him!
