Sucking it Up

A good nights rest didn't come. But that isn't so strange, yet I do feel a little better this morning. I have made some plans. Now to set these in action.

In the up coming weeks I will be writing more and more about doing without. As of this moment our income is 1/3 what it was a few months ago. Winter is a bad time for homesteaders, and motorcycle mechanic/builders to make money. And honestly, we were unprepared for this. We found ourselves complacent, and use to the amount of money we were bringing in. This sudden shift is difficult. I am not worried about food for my family, as I preserve food throughout the summer. We have animals to butcher if push comes to shove, but let us hope that doesn't become a must, not yet.

Now the time is more important than ever to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and make things happen. Spring is our goal. Why, Because motorcycles come back out, the grain begins to grow, and animals are born. Spring signifies new life, but here, here on the Neophyte Homestead we plan on showing that in the darkness night of the harshest winter we can bring about new life.

Wow, Phelan. I'm not extending sympathy here, just moral support. From what I've read of you, I have great faith in your bootstrapping abilities. I'm sending good thoughts your way. Hang in there.

We're feeling it too. Eric is a mechanic too and works on commission. No work, no $. And with everyone hurting, they're letting their car repairs slide. Like you, we've got food stocked up, but it's still not a pleasant feeling. Looking forward to see what you have to say for those of us who already lack the "latte factor" so many people talk about.

I, too, am sending moral support and know that if anyone can spring life in a dark winter, its you.

It's me said...

Sending strong thoughts your way. I've always believed that a dark winter makes the light of spring that much brighter.

You'll do fine. Just imagine if you had NO preparations. You are blessed my friend.

It's gonna be a long hard winter in a lot of places, for a lot of us. My DH has been out of work going on 6 months. My DD15 works because she needs to pay for her own youth group trips and clothes. I think it makes perfect sense for us all to talk about what we do to make it on a lot less money. It's not sniveling; it's sharing information that might help someone else.

I worked at an urban food bank today. A lot of the food items ran out before the line of people did. I may not have a lot, but I have enough. Enough food put by, enough warmth to sleep soundly, enough confidence in our ability to make it through the dark days.

If anyone can make it, I know that you can.

Rick's job doesn't pay much, but we know that the city will always need it's street workers, and they are already pared down to a minimum crew and thankfully Rick still has a job...
The lack of a garden for the last two years makes it a bit harder, and the FEMA trailer is ectremely expensive on electricity (with almost no insulation!) But we made it last year, and we'll make it again!

Like the others, I think you will make it to spring fine due to your abilities and determination. But here are well wishes and hopes for better things anyway.
