Kansas storms

We had an interesting evening.

I noticed the sky had turned green. Here that means trouble. I have to get use to the fact that in Kentucky, green sky does not equal straight line winds or micro bursts.  I told Husband things were a brewing, and we turned on local weather. 80 mph winds with softball size hail was headed our way.

Awesome.

I hurriedly put my brace on and hobbled skipped, I still can't run yet, outside to roll up truck windows; it was 106f that day, and secure the gate. As I walked quickly; still not even speed walking range yet, I saw the first burst headed our way. I spun around, putting my back into it and yelled at Husband. It slammed so hard into me that it took my breath for a moment. Unfortunately I was wearing a tank top and sand pelted my shoulders and arms. When it had passed, I once again headed for the gate. Another burst showed itself. I turned my back to it again, yelling at Husband "another one!" He couldn't hear me this time. I could see his eyes double in size before he too quickly gave the wind his backside.

Sand blasted my flesh. Pieces of  my neighbor's car port that was sitting in a trailer was suddenly airborne (barn metal) flying over her privacy fence, ending up somewhere in the backyard. I managed to get the gate secured before the third burst assaulted me.

Closer to the house, Small and I were engulfed by a decent sized dust devil. That's always a cool thing, just so you know.  Then the wind changed from bursts to straight line. I decided to stay behind the house and take some video.

This would be why our trees do not make it over 35 ft tall.

Turns out, this wind measured 89 mph.

As soon as I went back inside, we lost power. Luckily no hail reared its ugly head. We had an 1 1/2" rain fall in less than 15 minutes. The wind changed direction on the backside and things died off. Large and his girlfriend were in town. With the movie over, they called for a ride. Rubberneck time!

A tree was down over the roadway, and a firework tent was gone. All their wares still sitting on tables, soaked. It was either for a school or church, their sign was missing so I am not sure. But the teens standing around, looking downtrodden was a bit saddening. All the money they lost in their fundraiser efforts is devastating. Yesterday was the first day for fireworks to go on sale. The ones still wrapped on plastic should be ok.

The city seemed to have suffered very little damage. However the suburbs and the country side saw a lot of tree damage. Several fires sprung up in the area as well.

Around 4 am my house came to life, waking us all up.

Phelan,

I hate those harsh winds that take your breath away. Good thing no one was hurt with the flying debris. Last night around 1030PM heavy winds came through our place throwing potted plants every where along with knocking over wood. Everyone's okay here, just a mess to clean up.

I'm glad you and your family are all right!

What did you mean by "Around 4 am my house came to life, waking us all up."?

Glad it wasn't too bad for you Sandy.

Fancy, power came back on. Lights we forgot to turn off, and one tv that it doesn't matter if you turned the power off comes on after a blackout. And it always seems to be at full volume for some reason.

I hate those sudden storms! At least you didn't get any hail!

I know what you mean about the house coming alive!

Oh darlin'. Sky turns green here in KY and you still better take cover...usually means funnels.

They're all acting like it was nothing when I was there.

Yep....yellowish green skies here in Michigan mean trouble also. I can't believe all the rain we've had so far this year! Stay safe!!
