A Lazy Yet Effective Homemade Fly Trap

After the months and months of over 105F and no rain. We got 2", and flies. Flies are freakin everywhere! Thick swarms, so I had to do something.

I tried various recipes for traps and repellents. The Lavender worked a bit, but still my home was invaded. This one trap worked the best out of all that I tried.

1 quart jar, with lid
1/2 cup vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
Water

Puncture some medium holes in the lid. Add the sugar and vinegar, then top with water. Screw on lid and place jar where the flies are a nuisance.

Homemade fly trap that actually works

On a side note, Large dyed his own hair, blue this time. And as you can see in the picture above, I will never ever allow him to dye it on his own again. Quick tip, olive oil soaked qtips or cotton balls will scrub off hair dye on your skin.

And a HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEDIUM! He turns 11 today! No flies on his cake.

You know, I forgot you could do this. I'm going to get a jar right now....since we got rain, we too are overrun with the flying nuisances. Hope you are having a good day, other than the flies!

Sometimes the old ways of catching flies and other pest turn out to work the best!

Good work on the trap!

I will have to remember this trick with the flies.

Tell Medium Happy Birthday and give him a hug.

Great idea! I have those ugly fly strips all over my kitchen right now. Not very appetizing, to say the least. I also recently read that peppermint and peppermint oil repels flies, but I haven't tried that one yet, so I don't know if it works or not.
Happy Birthday Medium!

Peppermint plants don't work. They are at my homes entrance and the flies don't mind one bit. Out of all the oils I tried, lavender was the best at repelling, but it seemed I was fighting a losing battle at that point.

Your blog came just in time. Made the fly trap a couple days ago and am amazed at the number caught so far.

Try one with one chunk of dry cat/dog food. Within hours you will have every fly within 100ft.

Wonderful to hear Diane!

Shotgunner, since I make my own dog food, it would be the same as letting meat rot in a jar. No doubt that would work! I have seen flies swarm to sweet feed, I could see it working readily. Thanks for the tip.

Pamela, why thank you!

Do you dissolve the sugar or let it sit in the bottom?

Phelan said...

Sorry to take so long to get back, was in a motorcycle wreck.

I do not fully dissolve it. Just swirl.

Are you using apple cider vinegar or white distilled vinegar?

Phelan said...

For this one I used white. However I have used apple cider with same results.

I WILL be doing this today!! In in Mississippi and the flues are as big as hummingbirds, especially around the horses. I can't even sit on my patio without being swarmed and its been so hot here that they love coming in the house to cool off. Thanks for sharing your great idea.

Hot dogs, sugar and water work as well same concept just make sure you use enough sugar but u want the hotdogs to be a little out of the sugar eater

I made something similar on difference was adding a banana peel and a few drops of dish soap. All I can say is the flys are everywhere except in the trap. Fly swatter still the answer at my house Pinterest failed me on this one.
