When the Amish think you're crazy

My mother and I went up to Yoder yesterday. I went looking for a hand cranked wringer/washer.

First stop was the hardware store. I asked the gentleman behind the counter, a happy soul, he said that they had a lot of hand cranked items, but not one of those. We shopped (Or rather mother shopped) and we went to the Bulk Food Store.

The fudge is awesome. Not as good as my mother's, but still great. I got some barley and thought to ask the woman behind the table if she knew of anyone that might be selling a wringer/washer. She asked if I wanted the entire washing machine. That's what she uses, you can hook it up to electricity, but of course she doesn't have any and it is hooked up to a generator.

no I said, I am just looking for the ringer part.

She then asked if I was getting it to actually use. When I replied that yes, that was my intention, she shook her head and informed me that I was going way back.

When the Amish think you crazy, well. . . ~insert evil laugh here~

I have had the same problem in Yoder myself! What DOES that say about the direction my life is going?

I have also been looking for one. I have gone without electricity for over 5 days twice because of Hurricanes. That was when I lived in town. My friends here in the country have told me that after a Hurricane it can be a minimum of 3 weeks before we get our power back on. They focus on getting the cities running first

Katie, I guess we are just more hardcore old school than even the Amish. :D

Barbra, you can find them online if you are willing to pay a pretty penny.

Lehman's has them! I just told my husband I wanted one. He gave me that...you're crazy...look and went on about his business. They are pricey though.

We have ringer washers, we have hand cranked ringers, we never use them though. Seems to take longer to use them than it does just to ring them by hand *shrug*

Haha! :) That is too funny! What about a mop bucket and wringer? I saw some cheap ones on Amazon.

I have one of those hand-cranked wringer things. My husband's uncle found it for me. It's an antique - cost me $50. Works great! ;).

New ones are expensive, but so are the old ones I found on ebay. I will have to hit u garage sales and estate sales to see if I can find something a little more reasonable.

"You are right about the fudge." she said boastfully.

Let me know if you find one!

I'm searching for a wringer as well! I wash some of my clothes by hand, and an "old fashioned" wringer sounds revelutionary right now, hehe :)
I'd love for you to stop by my blog!

Oh my! Good luck with that. Can't say I've got one of those on the top of my list. My laundry is a month behind as it is. *sigh*

Love it! You know when they shake their heads, you have made an impression...your are so right on. Their thinking that English lady is crazy! Although you may have just given her some interesting conversation with the other Amish ladies..."You'll never guess what one of those English asked for today"... Any luck finding one yet? I see them at the amish farm markets and auctions around here, but there again, your right on. The price is a WOW...

FYI, I have one of those wringer washers. My mom bought it for me for Christmas :) I believe there is another at the shop in town, but I'm not sure if it is hand crank.
