Hey Homeschoolers! The DOE is coming for you

Just kidding, but this article does make you wonder just why on earth the Department of Education needs short barreled pump action shot guns. Any ideas?

Federal and state law across the American landscape (and certainly here in Washington State) almost uniformly declares schools to be “gun-free zones,” yet the U.S. Department of Education is in the process of purchasing more than two-dozen short-barreled police-style shotguns which are supposed to be delivered by March 22 to an address in Chicago, IL.

A source in New York stumbled over the solicitation notice, which carries the number: EDOOIG-10-000004.

The purchase is for 27 Remington Model 870 pump-action shotguns with 14-inch modified choke barrels (the legal minimum length for private citizens is 18 inches without a special license). These shotguns are to be fitted with Wilson Combat ghost ring rear sights, Knoxx adjustable stocks and Speedfeed fore-ends.

Even more intriguing is the fact that, according to the solicitation notice, these are the “only shotguns authorized for ED based on compatibility with ED existing shotgun inventory, certified armor and combat training and protocol, maintenance, and parts." Read entire article here>>>

What bothers me most about this whole thing...is the fact that they have an existing inventory! What the heck do they have for ANY shotguns?

This is very troubling to me...!

That seems to be bothering a few people. I am still trying to figure out what crime that involves DOE funding justifies the use of a shotgun, period. And then why are all these ordered guns only going to one district? 27 guns all going to Chicago.

I'd say it's troubling!

Just a couple of nights ago on the city news, there was a report of a gun fired at a school. When the story came up it played out like this; The Superintendent of _______
school received permission to bring his ( 1850's period?)black powder rifle to school to show in a history lesson. When showing the gun, it fired! His reply to the news was, he didn't remember loading it and didn't know it was loaded. Thankfully no one was hurt, only the wall.

HELLO, what did he think he was going to get off by saying he didn't remember loading it and didn't know it was loaded! What is the #1 rule? His butt should be fired immediately, but it didn't appear that was goign to happen.

This is very disturbing! And as a homeschooler I am very alarmed that the district(any) has guns.

I can almost understand forgetting that a cartridge using gun was loaded, "almost". But a blackpowder rigle? That is not something you do without thinking about it!

OOPS, rigle is a new type of rifle by the way.

Kelle, I'm with Bob. How can someone not know that a black powder rifle was loaded? That is just scary.

Maybe we'll get lucky and the DOE will make them mandatory for home-schoolers-- being their own sort of head and all...

I've got it! Kansas City, Mo just voted to close 50% of their schools next year. The DOE needs it for riot control.

I read an article and evidently the DOE has an Office of the Inspector General, in Chicago. They are tasked with investigating fraud involving funds provided by DOE. Here's a link to a Washington Post story.http://voices.washingtonpost.com/answer-sheet/education-secretary-duncan/ed-department-buying-27-shotgu.html
Great Blog Phelan!
