Busy busy

I have always heard that Kansas was great about Homeschooling. I just went and read CHECK, there is nothing in the State Laws about Homeschooling. I have to declare my home a private school. But there is no State fees for registering. And there isn't mandatory testing required. It is all rather interesting.

I looked up some of the things you were suggesting.

Sonlight seems promising

And I guess I need to find a copy of Wisdom's Way of Learning.

I am unable to find a homeschooling group for the area we will be living. Which truthfully doesn't surprise me. More than likely I am going to have to approach them myself once out there.

In other news.

My Step-father has had a headache for a full week. Not a migraine. He went into the Dr. office and they discovered an infection under his skin on his head. He was given meds and was told that if the headache wasn't gone by today, they were going to do a CT. I am worried, as of yesterday he still had this headache.

We went to our friend Hooter's house yesterday. My husband worked a bit more on his motorcycle. While the boys and I helped Hooter with my Husband's motorcycle's paint job. Can't wait to show you guys what it looks like. Then the boys got to paint our giant mailbox.

Late spring gardening season is rapidly approaching. Our last frost date is April 28th (zone 5 and sometimes 6). Are you ready?

I'm so ready that I already have potatoes up and tomato plants set out.

Sonlight is an awesome company. :-) My former step-daughter was using them years ago and at the time I was creating my own curriculum each year. When my (now) ex was asked to go through and give his preference between Sonlight and a couple other programs, I told him hands down Sonlight would be the one I went with if I were to buy a curriculum. Still is, tho with my second husband there is an issue with faith-based vs secular curric. If I had my druthers, I'd use Sonlight.

If you have time, pop over to my blog and check out my Follower named Luke. His dad is one of the creators/owners of the company - they both write interesting blogs.

If you are interested in not going with a pre-packaged curriculum at all, you might pick up a copy of Home Learning Year by Year by Rebecca Rupp. It's what I used when "doing my own" - plus Sonlight's book list, as possible.

When we moved to CA I had to register our homeschool as a private school too - it intimidated people at times who were new to the homeschooling community, but it wasn't really that bad. The biggest thing was deciding who to name as the head of the school and as the instructor. It was even submitted online - easy peasy.

Good luck to ya! And if there aren't any hs groups out there, dig around on Yahoo! Groups. Sometimes you can find online groups that are just as supportive as IRL - and they could turn into something local. Grab the librarian too - they often know who the hs'ers are and even if there's not an official group, they can tell you when to conveniently be there with your kids so you can start networking. Library day used to be set in stone for us.... and we often saw the very same fellow hs'ers who did the same thing.

Yes, as a homeschooled kid myself, I loved Sonlight!

Of course I loved reading, period.

Maybe you'll find more homeschoolers once you've been going a while. That seems to happen to many people. Try some of the network groups out there, if you haven't already.

Good luck!

When I homeschooled I found I had to go over to another county to participate in groups as our county was sparse. It wasn't a long drive [45 minutes?] and it was well worth it.

Homeschooling exists everywhere - and I love how lax your state is! Where we live [unless you have a college degree] they watch/worry about every detail. I didn't have to worry about it since I did, but the stories of other parents made me feel so bad for them.

I had a great time making our own curriculum [the packaged were just too pricey for us] but they do serve a purpose to get started.

Your state should definitely have guidelines [via a website/snail mail] of what your child should be learning according to age/grade.

Have the best time! I loved it because EVERYTHING was a learning tool and they didn't even realize they were learning. And they weren't wasting all the time they would in school.

I miss it.

We don't use just one curriculum. We pick and choose and try different things.

I wouldn't get too hung up on choosing one curriculum and sticking to it.

The grandparents took a while to come around on this.

I had to giggle at the info on "frost" at the end of your entry. I'm reading this on April 27, and it's SNOWING in Denver!

Crazy.
