Some of you might be watching the news. Kansas will be withholding State Income Tax Returns.

This is the first I heard of this, total BS! They would throw a fit if those that OWED taxes to them didn't pay them. Yes, I live in KS and we haven't gotten ours back yet. We filed much earlier than usual because we feared this happening. Apparently not early enough! Glad you were able to get yours back. Out of curiosity, how early did you file yours? Sorry for the rant, you got my true, honest first reaction to the news. geez.

Glad you received yours. What will people do? Many count on their refunds to catch up on their expenses.

My first reacation was, I am soooo glad I already filed and got the return. We filed 3 weeks ago (e-file) and got a paper check in less than a week.

Gail, we are one of those people. State goes to back bills, federal goes to big ticket items. I have no idea what people will do. The State may also withold state empolees paychecks as well.

State income tax returns usually aren't as large as federal returns, but still every penny counts.

That said - The article states the bill hasn't even passed, nor has it even been presented to the Governor and the Governor has the final say and they haven't intimated what her stance is...I seriously doubt it will go through, as you can't keep back money people have honestly earned and overpaid to the state- it is Constitutionally illegal - this would be appealed [over/over & over again] if she tried it.

As for witholding paychecks, don't you mean Phelan that they will require state employees to take forced days off without pay? They are doing that here in VA/DC/MD where state employees are being required to stay home for a few days without pay to save the states money. But the all states have the ability to borrow to fulfill payroll to pay for hours already worked.

At least that is my understanding.

Just repeating what local news stated this morning. So I have no idea what they are doing. Isn't California sending IOU's out? Shes not tryng to tie things up, she wants to borrow the money to make up for the shortfall, the GOP says you can't do that becase bill will come due before they could pay it back. That is why Income tax returns might be witheld and why they are being sent out late. I will see if I can find a more local story than what I posted.

Here you go

Kansas taxpayers also are due about $12 million in income tax returns. The state stopped payments on the refunds Friday.

Argh! Even though I've spent a grand total of 10 days in Kansas over the last 22.5 years, I've been giving them my state tax money the whole time.

I always get a large refund because I overpay to avoid surprises in changing tax laws.

Now they aren't going to give it back...that's it. I'm switching to Florida!

Wow, this makes me really glad I live in a state with no income tax. I can't believe they can do something like this. Tax refunds are money that never really belonged to the state. It's like forcing taxpayers to issue the state an interest free loan. How can that be legal?

Now we know why they want to take away our guns! LOL - just kidding. Hey, move to NH. We don't have a state income tax, or sales tax either. Also, just kidding - sort of. Seriously though, that's the tax payer's money. If the taxpayer was late paying the tax they'd get fined and have to pay penalties. Wonder if the taxpayers can assess penalties and late fees on the state for delaying refunds? -Sandy

What the eff? This is the first I've heard of such...I guess I have to do a bit of browsing on this one. It sounds like the stuff revolutions are made of. Damn.

How horrible, so many people rely on their refunds.

Overpaying your taxes IS issuing the government a loan and it's a crummy savings plan. You don't even get any interest. I know banks pay lousy interest, but at least the money does grow a bit!

Sorry to hear KS is being so idiotic. Most of my family is in AZ and they're cutting education so much that your kid would probably get just as good an education if they just closed all the schools.

States really aren't thinking straight today. I just heard on the radio that people are complaining that CA isn't slashing jobs "like business has had to do."

Hello??? Unemployed people don't buy much stuff.

OK, rant over. Thanks for highlighting what's going on in the middle there.
