Ditch Dentistry is an interesting topic. Even though it is old school, it is something that you might think about looking into if you choose to live out in the middle of no where. Well, more likely if the world collapses and you aren't married to a dentist. I am bringing this subject up as a reminder to myself, not just fodder for a blog. I was drunk from 1030 am to 5 pm yesterday. Wait! Please allow me to explain.
Sundays in Kansas there are liqueur stores open, but no dentists. I woke up around 500 am, little earlier then usual, with a dull ache in my ear. I have a broken wisdom tooth that I tend to forget about when it doesn't hurt. I did a few indoor morning chores and took some pain meds. The pain increased, and the over the counter meds couldn't touch it. I hoped into a shower and howled as the pain moved into my eye and lower jaw. I couldn't stand it any more, and went crying to my husband. Soon I flopped myself down on my bed and begged for some whiskey. My husband pulled a selfish act and wouldn't allow me to have a shot of his whisky, instead he gave me my bottle of Most Wanted, a locally made vodka that is wonderful. I took three shots, ok gulps straight out of the bottle, and waited until the warm sensation moved through my jaw. Then went to sleep. I would wake up, hurting, more vodka to remedy that. I drank half the bottle before the pain had subsided to a level that the over the counter meds could touch. Needless to say, not much was done on the homestead yesterday.
Now I am not saying that getting drunk will fix your teeth, nor am I saying don't go to a dentist, but looking into ditch dentistry, might be something to look into, just in case.
Of course this post will not get me in good with all the naysayers out there. Oh you know who you are. The ones that think my way of life is ridiculous. But, unless I wanted to spend a bunch of money that I don't have by sitting around an emergency room for 12 hours, just to get a shot of something that would have done the same thing as the vodka, well, I'll stick with the vodka and go see a dentist when they are open.

Now that's my kind of day of rest!
Oh man! I've been there girl. I had 2 broken molars I did the same thing with for years. The pain is like nothing I have ever experienced. I was never so happy when I was finally able to get them removed (no dental.) I feel for you!
People laugh when I say I use alcohol medicinally, but it's really quite a useful drug -- something which our ancestors didn't doubt.
I've had bad reactions whenever I've had to take prescription muscle relaxants, but alcohol does wonders, is a lot cheaper, and is more readily available. I really don't drink much, but it's saved me a lot of pain -- especially once a month. It's also great at settling the stomach (why you'll rarely see me at a Mexican restaurant without a margarita). And despite all the warnings about how one doesn't get good quality sleep from alcohol, I haven't noticed a difference when I've needed something to help me drift off (though melatonin also works pretty well on most occasions).
But of course, there is such a stigma about alcohol here in the U.S. that it's hard for me to even imagine a doc saying, "Take three shots and call me in the morning." The drug companies would go crazy, but if my own experiences are any evidence, a lot of money and time could be saved.
Get to the Dentist.
And that's why I am storing whiskey as part of my peak oil preparedness ;)
Ouch! I can remember my parents rubbing whiskey on our gums as children with toothaches. No doubt that would get a parent arrested these days...
Vodka tastes better than pain meds too ;).
In all seriousness though do get yourself taken care of, I have a huge fear of the dentist and will employ every method of avoidance before actually going.
Collodial silver works great on dental problems in my experience - the antibiotic properties help fight the infection that is usually the source of the pain in my experience.
Mine too Tim, if it wasn't for all the pain!
Farm mom, labor is an easier pain to deal with.
Meg, I have an odd doctor. A lot of over the counter meds contain alcohol, but I guess people assume that it is different because it is cherry flavored.
Meadowlark, I will soon.
Kathie, Collodial silver? isn't that the stuff that will turn you blue? The thing with grain alcohol is that it kills all kinds of germs. Good cleaning agent if you don't mind the smell.
Collodial silver will turn a person blue if you take too much of it, ha! We have a guy that's always running for public office here in Montana who did that very thing.
In small doses it's just fine - at least it has been for me.
The worse pain is tooth pain! I rank it above labor as well.
Also stocking up on the good stuff for PO! ;-)
LOL! Whatever works, I say! I got some Q-tip looking thingys from Walmart awhile back for mouth pain, I think Oral-B makes them. They work very well, but clove oil does, too. I used to rub it on my son's gums when he was teething. (A tiny bit goes a LONG way.) It works great, and is the ingredient in most of those mouth pain relievers.
