Now taking Pledges

I know, I just posted, but if you have already made up your mind, and ready to make your pledge please click here for the listing. If the list comes up alphabetical, I am currently the 3rd one down on the left side of your screen, A Homesteading Neophyte {just in case you forgot ;) But this will change as others sign up.

Just click on the button that says sponsor this blogger and pledge your amount.

My goal is $1,000. But even $5 will help. So, no matter the amount, I will be blogging for 24 hours.

If you do sponsor, feel free to take this banner and link back to this entry.

Get the word out, and let's help save family Farms.

Help keep family farmers on their land, join Farm Aid

My truck is stuck

My truck is stuck out in the field. I told him that it wouldn't work, but does he listen? Of course not. He made it through the thick mud and standing water, but the thin, ice like mud was another story, and now my truck is stuck. ~sigh~ He has left it to me to get it out.

Because of all the rain, I have been unable to really do much outside. So the homesteading stories have come to a halt. No worries though, things should be back to normal before you know it, and you will soon get tired of listening to me talk about harvest and canning.

Last year at this time I participated in Blogathon 2006. I raised money for Farm Aid. Many of you stepped up to the challenge and donate your money while I got goofy posting as lack of sleep took its toll. Once again I will be staying up blogging for 24 hours straight, posting every 30 minutes to raise money for Farm Aid.

My blog is awaiting approval {it was last year, shouldn't be a problem this year} and then I will post where you can sponsor me at. For now, think about pledging a donation to help keep me awake and going, spread the word, so that our money can go to those farmers that so desperately need your help. Farm Aid helps family farms stay in the family. Show some local love people.

Last year I did 24 hours of Q&A as well as a few games with prizes. This year I will leave it up to you. Do you want another Q&A? Do you want to hear about other farmers and their stories? Or do you want me to blog about something else other than homesteading or farming?

Just like last year, you donations will never pass through my hands. You make a pledge to my blog and charity, and at the end of the blogathon you will go to Farm Aid donations site and pay them directly.

Give it some thought, look over Farm Aid's site if you are not familiar with what they do, and hopefully we will see your pledge up under my name at the Blogathon's website in the upcoming weeks.

Thank you, all of you.

One Local Summer; 4th of July Style

I usually get a ton of great firework photos, this year {my camera is dry} I was unable to because we were setting them off in the rain.

We started the day with a head injury. My middle son got nailed with a plastic boat by the oldest son. I had to take a deep breath and remind myself that head wounds look worse then they are, breathe Phelan, breathe. We cleaned him up, and all was well. The boys lit noise makers and worms.

Storm clouds loomed and my husband lit the BBQ grill on the covered deck.

Darkness and sparklers came out.

Then the rain, and the boys hiding in the truck, while my husband and I got soaked setting off our firework display. Wet, but much fun!

As for our One Local Summer dinner,

We had homemade wheat hamburger buns, local raised, grass fed, organic hamburger {you'll need to scroll down for recipe} onions from garden {last year} tomatoes from a local greenhouse, sweet pickle relish {canned last year from garden} a simple potato salad {from garden with homemade ingredients, most of which were local} last year's frozen corn on cob, local butter, and baked beans that were canned by a neighbor. For dessert, strawberry shortcake. Everything came from under 50 miles from my home. {except the sugar and ground black pepper}

Independence Day in Kansas

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Last night on our way in from town, some of the locals were setting off their own fire works displays. My boys were in the truck with me, oooh, and ahhhing over the lights. Suddenly my oldest says "The corn's in the way." It was so matter of factly that I busted up laughing. He turned to me and asked why I was giggling so much. How many boys can say something like that in their lives, very few. And it just struck me as funny.

Today the family will get together, we will eat local food, and shoot fireworks bought from the Freemasons.

Enjoy your 4th or your Wednesday, and I will see you tomorrow.

No prairie fires this year.

Stephanie over at stop the ride is calling it repurpose, I still think it is brilliance in desperation, or white trash ingenuity. A few miles down from us, there is a house that is on the market. We stopped over because we know the couple that owns it and we wanted to talk to them about their house {hopefully we can get our friends into the place} While there, they offered up some re bar and a pick-up bed trailer. It was too wet to get it out, we will need to go back for it, but we did come home with another trailer. This one is the base of a camper The body was ripped off of it, and gutted down to the plywood base. I never thought of doing something like that, brilliant! My husband plans on adding a ramp and some metal studs that can hold tie down and use it for a motorcycle trailer.

Today is a busy day, we are attempting to make ourselves look normal. Tomorrow is the fourth and family and friends will be descending on us like locus. From where we are we can see the fireworks from the city, and from 2 small towns. We also get the race tracks celebration and one local man that has his own show, he is licenced for it. All around us the sky is full of color, and we have no curfew on when we must stop being noisy. By the next morning our long driveway will be full of firecracker remnants.

One local summer will be held on Independence day. Yes, it will be another BBQ. Today I need to bake hamburger and hot dog buns. the only thing that will not be local is the sugar used in the desserts.

I have so many green tomatoes. I am a little nervous about the sun finally making an appearance. Harvest will be large this year.

What are your plans for Wednesday?

tag teamed

I have been tagged by both Queen Wackamole and abbagirl74. As many times as I have been tagged with this one meme, I might have a hard time finding yet another 8 random facts about myself.

1. I have to post these rules before I give you the facts.
2. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
5. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog

1. I smoke ~I'm a smoker, I'm joker, I'm a midnight . . .~

2. I enjoy anime, maybe a little too much

3. I have RLS , dignosed at age 9.

4. I don't wear make-up

5. I wear a leather cowboy hat

6. I have a soft spot for men with very long hair ~as long as it has been taken care of~

7. I have been to the midnight showing of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" 10 times ~abbagirl, ya ready?~

8. I have chased a calf around a mud pit, attempting to catch the ribbon attached to it's tail to win a prize at CowTown. I was 7.

as for tagging. . . you're it!

I will go back to homesteading in the morning.

t'was a long weekend

I am grateful that our friends do not get married very often. The couple that got married in Sparks America decided to have a wedding reception for those that couldn't make it to the wedding. Of course we were invited. We headed into the city on Saturday night, ended up going to 3 different bike bars, each smaller than the last, until we ended up at the tiniest building possible with an incredible blues band and the bride's mother getting into a fist fight. Then grocery shopping at 230 in the morning, breakfast at 500am, my husband and I trying to crash on a twin size bed, then making are way home at 930 am. I am still paying for it. If you are interested in yet another aspect to my life, go check out what The Fool has posted.

The meteorologist say, rain rain is going away. yet at 6am this morning it was raining. My tomatoes are not thrilled about all of this water. If they could get a couple days of dry and sun, I will be dealing with more ripe tomatoes than I can handle alone. I have hired my 13 year old niece as a garden hand. She will be learning to care for a garden, help harvest and process items for canning. Hopefully she will catch on quickly and things will move smoothly along.

I found another bunch of grapes emerging on my vines.

And a hen came back! All I had left was my geese and a couple of roosters. The other day I saw one of my hens. I was thrilled, still am. Maybe another will follow suite. If someone does have them confined, I might have some hope on getting a few back. Yet I am not going to keep my hopes on it, maybe she was just in hiding.
