What the 'Mator with you?

~groan~ I know the title needs work.

I managed to retrieve the batteries that my oldest snagged from my camera, unfortunately it was too late and they were dead. There was something I wanted you to see. One of those woohoo! And what did I do? type announcements.

But since I can't show you, I will have to tell you.

I was out in the garden yesterday, harvesting, and I filled my basket with tomatoes. I was thrilled. I got in the house, ordered the scale into the kitchen, well asked the oldest boy to bring the scale to me. And weighed the tomatoes. 40 lbs! I brought in 40 lbs of tomatoes! Then later I went back out after the excitement and heat stroke wore off and brought in another 10 lbs.

What am I going to do with it all?

In order;
Ketchup
pizza sauce
spaghetti sauce
tomato soup
stewed
chili
pickled

That should cover what I have right now. The thing is, there are still lots and lots of tomatoes still green on the vine. I think I might have plenty of tomato products to last out the year.

I am excited, yet daunted by the task at hand.

Oooohhh! I am so excited for you! How many plants do you have in? I currently only have four tomatos ripe. (four, not four pounds, not forty pounds, just four!!!) Enjoy!!

The only red ones in our garden are the cherry tomatoes. Tons of big green ones, but I swear they are purposely taunting me with anticipation. I keep reading of so many harvesting red tomatoes yet I planted all mine in early May. Half baby plants- half straight seed into ground. Both are at the same level of maturity.
~Green with envy......

Every summer when the tomatoes came in we would have tomato and lettuce sandwiches till it was coming out our ears. I miss those days.

That's a lot of 'mators!

I have 40 plants that survived.

Tammi, they did that to me for a long time, then BAM! more tomatoes than I can deal with.

Maggie, oh I don't miss it ;)

I miss tomatoes. My backyard garden tomatoes have already come and gone. Our season starts early in South Texas. And we had some very unseasonably hot weather in late spring which meant that the fruit wasn't setting. Been a disappointing year for my favorite summer treat.

We have had an odd spring and summer. Spring had a late start,so did summer. So are fruit is late. But now that it is coming in, it is abundant. Sorry to hear things went bad for you.

Hey P...speaking of tomatoes, and daunting tasks, I just try to bite off a little bit at a time every night or so. Like last night I put up about 4 pints of corn and 3 pints of beets: not a lot of either, really, but 7 pints can share the pressure canner, and processing corn is really easy (beets, not so much: gotta boil them then peel them then cut them; all corn requires is getting cut off the cob and stuck in the cans and have boiling water dumped over them). If I were to look at ALL I want to put away, I would simply go crazy. Just what comes in every day, then try not to get behind!!!

Of course, this information will not help you at all if you are harvesting gallons of tomatoes per day ;0)

But yeah, that kitchen gets hot. Only doing one pot at a time? Not so hot.

Congrats on your bounty! If you have room in your freezer, extra tomatoes are easy to freeze whole, uncooked, skins on; just rinse, dry, de-stem, and toss in a bag together. When they thaw, the skins fall off (self-blanche), and you're good to go!
