Q&A

Abbagirl74 asks; When are you starting your garden, the actual planting? Do you have a plan-o-gram done already? I would be interested to know what you are planting this year.

The actual planting happens in stages, as soon as the ground is workable {Usually in March} we plant our potatoes, lettuce, radishes, and cabbage species. The "Plan-o-gram" hasn't been finished yet, we have been slightly distracted, hopefully we can sit down this weekend and get one done. As for what we are planting this year, we have downsized the garden because of the building.

* Corn
* carrots
* potatoes
* tomatoes
* sweet peppers
* green beans
* peas
* variety of squash
* variety of melon
* cucumber
* radish
* lettuce
* broccoli
* brussel sprouts
* peanuts
* onion

Caroline asked which hatchery do I order from, I ordered from the McMurray Hatchery. I have never had a problem with them, and they have always been great at fixing their mistakes. I am not blaming them for the death of the chicks. The post office knew what they were, it says "Live Chicks" all over the package. This was just an unfortunate happenstance. I mainly order exotics from them, as there are no local breeders here. If NAIS doesn't get in the way, we thought about becoming exotic chicken breeders. We adore those bantams.

Lisa asks; So here's my question-any plans to start seed indoors under lights?

We did have plans, and are late on doing so. Usually we try to start tomatoes and peppers already. We haven't had a good success rate at doing this, but we try different methods every year. We will start our melons inside in a few weeks.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I'm surprised at the carrots; which variety? Most people I know have not had much luck with them.

I love the exotic chickens! As anyone who reads my blog knows, I'm particularly fond of Polish, although I also have some Mille Fleur D'Uccles, some Cochins, silkies (my daughter's favorite), and one lonely Serama hen. I'm just waiting for one of my big hens (or silkies) to go broody to order some more Serama eggs - they don't tend to hatch well in an incubator.

How's your dad?

Just stopping through to give you a hug, Phelan. You're in my thoughts. There are a lot of people who love you. Take the strength.

First, know that vibes and good thoughts continue to go out to you and your dad.

I'm glad you're having a question session! I've been waiting for one! (Oh, I know I could have asked anytime, but I like saving them for Q&A sessions!)

Have you thought about raising sheep and spinning your own yarn or weaving your own textiles? (I could totally see you with a spinning wheel and/or a loom!)

You do have goats, right? Do you raise them for the milk - or are they pets?

And would you ever think about raising a dairy cow or two? (Enough for your family.)

wow, I have never done a plan-o-gram, I just stuck it in the ground all at once which is probably why everything throws up and dies every year!

So living in the southeast, are there any good resources out there I can consult for one of these? I would love to know things I could start inside and maybe transport to our new home when we move in May....
