To my unschooling/homeschooling friends

Just in case you haven't seen this yet;

The Great School Debate

I never cared for Dr. Phil. And though I do not homeschool, this is ridiculous.

Thanks to Lynn for the link.

Thanks for the support! I also think this is ridiculous! Adds fuel to the fire for my husbands family. They think we are weird already!

Thanks for the link, Phelan. The biased slant to the show is unfortunate, but it's not really surprising. People will think what they want to think.
At least this way we get the libraries and museums to ourselves during the week! :)

These daytime programs makes me nauseous because they hardly, if ever, show something more truthful. They wouldn't get ratings if they showed what we unschoolers/homeschoolers actually do each day.

Thanks for the link!

Dr. Phil is so much into the pop culture it doesn't surprise me. He has always played into stereotypes to basically preach to his choir. I remember when he got in trouble with nurses by claiming many were going after doctors to marry them so they could get out of nursing. Anyone who takes him serious is asking for a dose of brainwashing.

Dr Rhill, is an idoit. Sorry but it needed to be sid. ;) He is self serving man with an ego bigger than Oprah's.

I belive he is a troll who does this for sensation and to create a "buzz" about his show so that he can become "bigger and more famous"

Not that I have strong feelings about these types of shows or anything.

I clicked on the link and read the whole thing! I have no opinions about homeschooling, but, I do have some opinions about Dr. Phil.

I challenge everyone who is a Dr. Phil fan to turn the volume off and the captions on for his show and "READ" what he is saying. You won't beleive the difference and how badly he makes no sense!

I am not a fan of the doctor's and probably never will be.

I have taught for sixteen years (grades K-8). Many of my associates have homeschooled their children. I find it to be a very viable alternative. Our notion of education has a very narrow definition in practice.

I don't watch television, because I don't enjoy being lied to - so I've never tuned in to Dr. Phil. I pity the fool who does.

...and a "nice blog" to you. Thanks.

Stephanie, you are welcome. Just because I don't do it, doesn’t mean I think it odd.

Cheryl, you're welcome. That statement about having things to yourself during the day cracks me up, only because whenever my state makes the national news {over teaching evolution} I say the same thing about people not moving here.

Burdockboy, couldn't agree more. I missed that scandal.

O4WP, nice to see you around. :D I agree, he is a troll. I don't watch Oprah {just some of her public statements make me cringe} and have seen Dr. Phil a few times. He doesn't seem to realize how manipulative teen girls are. That was when I realized he should have never been given a tv show let alone a degree!

Elli, I saw you left a comment there. Good for you. I didn't feel I had anything to add to the conversation since I neither watch Dr. Phil nor homeschool. Not a fan of the not-so-much-a Doctor.

The fool, thank you for stopping by and commenting. I feel sorry for those people that are unable to differentiate between fact and fiction.

I have always thought that Dr Phil’s show is nothing more than lame pop-psychology and that nothing he says should be taken to heart. I only watch it on occasion so I can laugh at Dr. Phil’s silly ways.

That said, unschooling (not home schooling in general, just unschooling) concerns me. I can't claim to know a lot about it, but I have read stuff on the Internet written by unschoolers themselves (a better source than Dr. Phil!). I am not sure how letting kids dictate what they want to learn leads to a well-rounded learning experience. I talked to my high-school age son about this. He thinks unschooling sounds great. All he wants to learn is how to drive. He’d agree to dabble in history occasionally, but no math, science or English because they are all too boring! How would that prepare him for a job or college or whatever?
