I am not homesteading. I am hobbying. Garden and chickens.
If the world ends, we will be alright.
Large is in college, Medium turned 14 today, and Small is learning to play the saxophone.
And the shop is doing very well. But I rarely see Husband.
As long as the shop continues to grow like it is, we will be ok. And maybe we can go back to homesteading. But for now. . . It is what it is.

Thanks for checking in.
Gardening, raising chickens and boys is nothing to sneeze at. Treading water financially is a pretty impressive life skill too.
So glad to hear from you. Hang in there...hugs and prayers from Kingsport
I have missed your posts
What your friend Judy said, raising chickens, vegetables and boys is awesome. It's not a hobby, it's your life. I'm glad you are holding your own, and that the shop is doing well. I hope husband can return home permanently soon!
Congratulations to your sons!
Thank you for the update. Hobbying is a great place to be!
Glad to see you posting. My uncle and aunt lived in Kansas. He was a lifer in the Army. Ft. Riley last posting. He passed away, but she still lives in Junction City. My youngest son was raised by his mother, my ex, in KY, in Rush. He is now in the Navy and stationed at Virginia with his wife and my granddaughter.
I was a sax player in school. I learned to play all the wind instruments just by watching others in class, and then practicing at home on instruments, which were available from my older siblings. After my divorce at age 30, I joined a rock band, played sax, and then learned to play guitars from, again, watching others.
So best of luck to your youngest. I made some money, met some amazing people, and got to go places that I probably would not have if I did not play music.
I remarried and moved so I quit playing for money, but still play guitar on occasion.
I don't homestead, but I am an amateur prepper, compared to some of them out there, but I look forward to more of your blog. Good luck to you from West Mi.
Phelan,
You have to do what's right for you and your family. Were happy to hear the shop is growing, and you all are doing well. Congratulations to Large for starting college. A big Happy Birthday to Medium, 14 is a great age :-), and a big pat on the back to Small for learning to play the saxophone.
Hugs and love to you and yours,
Sandy
Phelan, I found you again! It's been several years since I lost my links to my favorite bloggers, and here you are. :)
Life twists and turns, but you are an amazing woman no matter if you are "homesteading" or just doing a "hobby farm" for now.
My respects to you,
Parker
Phelan, you do what you can, when you can. It may not be homesteading, but it is something. Forward movement. Glad you're doing, I was worried for a bit. Thanks for checking in. Keep on keepin' on.
Glad you're all OK, nice to hear from you.
I'm sorry you aren't homesteading as you would like to be, but I echo the others' sentiment that raising sons, chickens, and veggies is nothing to sneeze at. And I'm also very glad to see you post, I was worried about you. I'm glad to hear the shop is doing well.
Hello! Long time reader, first time poster. I have really enjoyed reading your journals over the past. It makes a great break from the grind of being in an office all day. I’m fully aware that you work possibly much harder then I do, but I hope you are enjoying the rewards much more.
Keep it up! Best Regards. JT.
Even posting "awful" is OK. I've really missed your posts! The blog does not have to be all roses- there are lots of bloggers out there doing that just fine. Some of us (probably most of us) really dig on hearing about real life. Write it. We'll read it and understand in our souls. xo
I miss hearing from you too!
It sounds like you are really busy with living--raising kids and chickens with little help. It's good the shop is doing well.
So glad to hear an update, whatever you're doing Phelan.

I just wanted to say, I just finished reading all (yes, all, I'm one of those people ;) ) of the archives, and I love your blog. I'd discovered it back in '13 when I was looking for info on moving to a large piece of land and was just starting to get into the idea of homesteading, started reading the backlog, then most 'fun' internet fell by the wayside as my old job got more and more unbearable. I'm hopefully getting ready to get my own homestead in a few months, so I decided to find and read your blog. So, thank you for the honest views of homesteading, how hard it can be, how rewarding it can be, and how to do things that do tend to get glossed over by other writers. I almost hate to ask since I'm a new reader (new since your last update, even), but could you continue to update occasionally on what's going on? To be honest, I read just as much to hear about how you and yours are doing as to get homesteading info-- just something about the way you write and your story is fascinating and compelling. Anyhoo, I think I'm babbling now, I just wanted to let you know I really appreciate your blog.
I hope you're OK....
I hope that y'all are doing well and that life is good.

How goes the chickens and gardening?
Hope things are turning out well. Miss hearing from you
I can confirm gardening and taking care of chickens is enough of a task! I completely understand your decision.
It's mid August 2016. Just a reminder that you are still missed by many.
Life is a series of ups and downs and the doldrums in between. We all do the best we can.
But things do happen, totally unexpected things, good things. Hang in there.
Last April I ran into someone who changed my life for the better. Poof! Things were good, things were different... it happens.
Hang in there Phelan.
Miss your blog. How is large doing at school? How is the house coming along? Are you guys okay?
Phelan
Any news?
Good to hear from you.
Just checking for updates. I know you said you are done, but I still like to check every once in awhile. You might think you are only posting negative stuff, but you are posting the amazingly hard work you are doing. Whenever I start to feel like running off and starting over, I think of you. What I think of an ideal life made of pixie dust and roses, is in reality very hard work-with a lot of struggling. For all of the hardships you have had, you really persevered and come so far.
While I will still sometimes imagine running off into the woods and starting over, I know how much hard work it really takes, that is all thanks to you. I giggle a little bit when I read how a friend thinks they are going to take off and survive life on the land, or when they say they will only keep a month of food in the house, because after that, they will just grow more and be self sufficient if anything where to happen to their job or way of life. It really is more complicated than that though, isn't it?
You interjected a healthy dose of reality to my fantasy. Thank you, again.
Just checking in, hope the boys are all doing well.
Hope all five of you are well!
Just posting to let you know my thoughts are with you and the boys. Hope things are improving. Hope Large is thriving in college. Miss your posts.
Do you ever look at this any more? I hope you're doing at least ok...
Hey wish you'd post again
It's been a couple of years... you still there? Just curious.
