Nerves of Steel?

Husband and I were at the shop yesterday, minding our own business, when we got a visit from the UPS man. Now this isn't the first time he has come in. We get deliveries here often. Either for the shop or for the house. UPS and FedEx are forbidden to deliver on the road that my driveway connects to. So I get things delivered here. We are on a first name basis with the UPS man.

"Found your driveway." Was the first thing out of his mouth. "Yeah, keep getting things delivered here. No way I am going down your drive!" And then the normal banter begins. Asking again why in the world we moved here.

Now this is the most common question. Since no one knows us, they assume we have come from out of town. However when we mention we came from Kansas, the questions begin. Why the heck....? Some days I am inclined to agree with them. Yes, why did I? Husband put me in my place this morning (and if you take that the wrong way then you have issues my dear) with the simple phrase, quietly spoken "I like it here."

I digress, UPS man informed us that we were crazy. The road that they are not allowed on, we take all the way down, everyday. And all the way up every night. There are other, longer ways to get off the ridge. This is the quickest route. And it scares the local. Well makes them nervous any way. (which I have heard from multiple sources) There are no guard rails, steep drop into a ravine, and only wide enough for one car.

The pictures are a bit deceiving. There are no blind corners down it. You can see a car coming in enough time for one of you to find one of the few areas large enough to pull over and turn your lights off. That is if you are paying attention. If you are too freaked out to watch the road and for on coming traffic at the same time. . . well you might end up off-road up the side of the hill. However this road is nothing compared to our driveway.

Later the same day, our mail lady showed up at the shop. To chat. She was going to the pharmacy and thought to drop in. The first thing out of her mouth is. "You have nerves of steel." USPS is not allowed on that road either. With all the snow, she has seen our truck's tire tracks leave our drive and head off down the ridge. We have taken the road with ice and 5"+ of snow covering it. As long as you are in low gear and allow gravity to pull you along, no problems. She thinks we are crazy. Between our driveway and taking that road, we seem to be redneck enough to be accepted but a little nuts by local standards.

Good for you! If they're smart, they will appreciate having neighbors with "balls of steel"!

Sounds like you're making a place for yourselves in "that there holler"...hang in there it'll get better come spring.

My trail up the mountain is similar. I like it that way. UPS and FedEx leave my packages in big plastic bags tied to my gate at the foot of the mountain. My mail box is on a gravel road about a mile from the gate.

Well I have to say it was good to hear husband likes it! It will get so much easier when the weather breaks!!
So can a motorcycle make a motorcycle make it down your driveway or will we have to take a shuttle if we visit lol?!
