Depression Gift: Homemade watercolors

What you mean they have 4 kids now?!?

Homemade watercolors are simple.

You will need

1 tablespoon clear vinegar
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon corn starch
1/2 teaspoon corn syrup
food coloring
plastic egg carton
(paper ones will bleed through)
this makes 2 egg cups full

Mix the vinegar and baking soda in a old coffee cup. Once the fizzing goes down add the corn starch and syrup. mix well. It will make a thick paste, that seems like a solid melting.

Mix in your food coloring, whatever colors you or your kids want. Pour into the cups.

Repeat until you have all your cups filled.

Or leave an empty spot for the water.

Allow the cakes to completely dry before closing and decorating the egg carton. Make a pouch for the brushes.

Dip brush in the water and smear over the top of the egg cakes to use.

This is genius! I've been trying to think of things to give as gifts to kids. Now, I just need to get creative with containers since I don't have many egg cartons about.
Thanks :D

Thank you! I can't wait to make these for my grandbabies!

Hey, Basic Humanity, I bet you could use one of those 7 day pill keepers that you'd find in WalMart or the Dollar Store. That should work well.

Trans, there are some pretty cool things you can make at home.

Stephen, hope they have fun with it!

Basic, I was thinking the same as kath. They also have these small single level tackle boxes and bead holders that might work as well. People are always giving me egg cartons, so it was just something I had on hand.

Have fun Kath!

Kath, Phelan, thanks those are good ideas. Will have to have a look for some. Maybe I'll get people to save me egg cartons next year.

Phelan - this is awesome! there are lots of children in our community and we could teach them how to make their own watercolours! i have printed out the recipe and gather all of the things we need and take it all to the children's Christmas party - they are so gonna love this!

thanks for sharing! your friend,
kymber

I forgot to mention that the paint can be used as soon as it is made as well. No need to wait for it to dry before using.

I will not start any more projects....I will not start any more projects....I will not start any more projects.....

You do know that is a very cool thing to do, don't you?

Poor Mama Bear :(

;)

It takes less than an hour to do all 12 colors, and I did two cartons at a time. It's a good last minute project. It does however take a day or two to dry, depending on how warm your house is. I put mine onto of my stove.

I love this idea. I also did not know that this was something I could do myself this easily. My nieces and nephews love this kind of stuff and I've been out of work nearly a year now. Thank you so much.

Love the idea of this, my daughter goes through so many art supplies. I'm thinking the pill organizer would be a great small set to pack into her art kit.
