WARNING: Super duper graphic. No really, not kidding on this one

So I debated back and forth weather I should even post this or not. But as I have posted graphic photos in the past. . . but even this one make me cringe.

I wonder about chickens sometimes. It almost seems like they can't feel. Yes if you step on them they will freak out. But they get cuts in their skin or chunks missing and they wonder around like nothing is wrong. Even in the caponizing instructions you don't do anything to comfort them or sew them back up. you just leave the cut to heal on it's own, checking to see if air has puffed up the wound.

Ok, yes I am in a way delaying this story. It's not a comfortable one. But things like this happen, and I have always been honest with you on things around here.

Some days I wake up to odd things around here. The night life around here must be interesting. I think there might be a lot of malt liquor involved. But I think what I woke to find yesterday take the award for most cringe worthy.

A roaster managed to get hung up on a piece of broken chicken wire. She stuck her head through to get at something, and got caught up in the bit of severed wire. In a panic, as chickens tend to do, she managed to pull her head out.

Honestly I never thought about a small break in the fence before. I know it can be sharp, as I have cut myself on it before, and husband has impaled his arm on it in the past. But this. . . However it does make sense. Chicken flesh peels off very easily. It was just hanging there, on her and the fence. ~shiver~

I didn't want to take the picture, but Husband insisted that I did. A true Zombie Chicken. I love finding those photo-shopped pics of them, they are always fun,  but to have one in your yard. Well. . .

Remember to check those fences. You don't want to wake up to this.

(chicken was dealt with, she is not suffering)

Poor chicken, is that her skull? Yes, when you live on a farm with animals these sort of things are going to happen no matter how hard you try and make things safe and look for things they can get hurt on. Reminds me of something someone told me about goats one time, "They are born looking for a place to die". Luckily we have not lost many over the years but they can find really weird and un-thought of ways to get hurt! Yes that picture does make one cringe, but I really appreciate you sharing the story (and resulting picture) because it will help other people to prevent it happening in their chicken coops. Who would have thought one could do something like that on a bit of broken wire. I wouldn't have, but now I know!

Yes, that is her skull and her naked eye balls. The photos don't do the cringe worthiness justice though.

Yes, goats do seem to be always looking for a place to die. Good neighbor has some horrific stories about his goats, a fence, and a large dog.

I too never thought a small break in a fence would do this much damage.

There's such a thing as taste in the blog world. I'm out. The agony of an animal isn't cute to me.

wow. when the hell did I say any of this was cute? I don't mind you leaving, since you won't even tell me who you are. Obviously you didn't read a thing I said.

I'm amazed she was still alive when you found her. Then again, there was a chicken that survived a beheading and still lived, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Chickens are a little freaky and scary when you think about it.

Sorry you had to add a disclaimer entry to your blog.

FTM, you know I was going to mention that one. The poor thing had only a part of it's brain left and the woman kept it alive, feeding it through it's exposed throat.

The disclaimer should have been added years ago. Might have saved me from some people that haven't a clue. No worries

Dang Phelan! You got me beat for the "ew" award. i thought crazy stuff only happened here on my farm! Dang shame you lost a roaster like that and i wouldnt have thought a small hole in the fence was a big deal either.

Luckily MM, it doesn't happen real often.

Why do most people always post negative comments anonymously? If you have an opinion be a big enough person to put your name behind it. I thought you were very clear in your intentions and I never thought for a second that you thought this tragic accident was cute in anyway. The picture is gruesome but after seeing it I will be VERY vigilant in keeping a chicken's fence free from any tiny holes or tears. I never would have thought a chicken could hurt itself like that on something so innocuous as a very small hole in a fence.

It wasn't just a hole. You know when the chicken wire breaks, and you have the wire sticking out? That's what did it. I assume that the broken wire got tangled up in her flesh, and when she thrashed around it got a bit tighten around her neck, then skinned her. The circle around her neck is near perfect.

My apologies. I thought you had posted yet another chicken post.

My reader put this back up. I am sorry. You have my comment on the most recent post.

I thought you just posted AGAIN and were trying to get people riled.

My apologies.

Poor chicken...and stupid people who cause you to need a disclaimer. sheesh

I am don't even understand why you would think that of me Skippy. It was difficult to post this in the first place, and then I bumped it down on purpose.

Oh, wow...that's a hell of a thing...

I once woke to a hen house that'd been raided by a fox. It was worse...but not by much. I let Springer Moutain raise my chooks, now...no longer have the stomach for it (may again on day, just not now).

Meanwhile, folks who take exception to raising critters for meat (and all that goes with that raising) should remember that ALL food is something that died to feed 'em. No one cares about carrots 'cause they aren't cute. There's never an uproar over a bruised rutabega. Hypocrisy, I say!

Sorry 'bout your chicken...and thanks for the reminder to check the fencing! No livestock here, but we do have kids and cats, always finding new ways to scare the pants off us...

Shade and Sweetwater,
K

Oh wow can't believe I'm only just catching up on this gore and drama.

I'm sorry about the poor chicken. I'm sorry you had people treat you badly without even getting to understand things properly.

Hope you're doing alright.
You're right, that is definitely not something I'd want to wake up to!
