I have not solicited anyone for prizes, nor even really thought about a charity, that was until I heard that last fall one of the Honor Flights (in Kansas) was canceled do to lack of funding. I still have not decided yet to do the blogathon, but I do want to bring this charity to your attention.
What is the Honor Flight? It is a program that flies our WWII vets to the DC Memorial. It shows our vets how much we appreciate them. Currently the program has 1,200 vets (KS) on the waiting list, and estimates say that here in Kansas 17 WWII vets die daily! 1,000 in the US.
The videos always make me tear up.
Please, if you can, donate or buy some merchandise.
It might be your chance to be a hero to our greatest heroes.

Vets are awesome, no matter which side they fought on. Sometimes pacifism misses the point that war is an ENORMOUS individual effort, actually going far beyond what most people today could possibly handle.
One very interesting book losely related to Homesteading and making it of the grid, though slightly more radical, is the 'Handbook of Traditional living'.

The same place also sells a few real nuggests (like the Self-sufficency handbook and the Ecotopia-books):

I can't believe I haven't heard of this program! Guess I've had my head under a rock or something!
Thank you for showing this!
The WWII memorial is beautiful and amazing. I was able to look up my childhood friend's son. Cy was the old man I helped farm with by hand when I was young. He lost his son on a practice parachute jump that somehow put him behind enemy lines.
I feel like I got to say goodbye to Cy when I was able to look up his son at the memorial.
