Friday Night at the ER

Last night I took Husband to the Emergency Room.

He scared me. Husband is the type of man that works through his illness and pains. Doesn’t complain to anyone but me about what hurts. And the complaint is more of a just to let you know. Yesterday was awful. I figured it was the flu or something close, I called the doc, but they couldn’t see him until Monday. Husband was in pain, so much so that at one point he told me that he would die before Monday. He surprised me and asked to be taken to the ER.

We headed to the new one they built about 15 minutes from us. In the car, Husband’s fingers went numb, as did his lips. He was freezing while I was sweating from the full blast on heater. He was having trouble breathing. At the ER they gave him a quick shot of saline when they drew blood and he felt a bit better. We talked with the doc while the security guard paced outside our door. We look like criminals don’t you know.

Husband got an EEG and a chest and abdominal x-ray. Turns out he only had a viral infection, and was slightly dehydrated. He was in a cycle of pain so to speak and it caused his first ever anxiety attack. His heart looks good and what surprised me and relieved me was there is absolutely nothing wrong with his lungs. After all these years of smoking one would think there would be some kind of blemish on them. Husband is perfectly healthy except for the viral infection.

Once they got the vomiting to stop, he was able to relax and the pain decreased. He was finally able to drink some broth once we got home and sleep.

We have no insurance, I paid cash for the visit, getting a 45% discount for doing so. just an FYI.

SO happy he is okay - wow. Pooldad is the same way and we called the ambulance for him a few weeks ago, so I understand your concern.

Great that he is going to be feeling better soon. Please give him my best and lots of love from the pond.

It takes a tough woman to be married to one of the tough guys. I'm glad it turned out to be viral and not his heart, glad you were able to get the discount for cash, and glad he's home and doing better now.

I would have been offended at the security guard outside the door but would have let it slide at the time. Now that the crisis is over, I believe I'd be having a talk with the patient advocate and hospital administrator at that facility. I don't care if you look like martians, unless you came through the door brandishing weapons and yelling threats, the security guard was uncalled for.
Grrrr....

Glad he is OK and hope he gets back to 100% soon.
I totally understand the tough guy problem. A few years ago we had a fire (hubby blew up the washing machine- long story) and even with second and third degree burns over 18% of his body, I had to convince him to go the the ER. MEN.
Hang in there.

It goes to show that first impressions are so often wrong! I'm glad that hubby's problem was treatable and he was able to come back home so quickly. That's the important thing!

Just remember, even the tough guys need a hug once in a while!

He's lucky to have such a good partner!

I am glad that hubs is ok. Men generally don't say anything about anything until they keel over.
Please take care and note that lots of healing energy is being sent your way,

Hi there, glad he's OK, BTW your health care system scares the c*** out of me. If your husband was my husband here, I would have called the emergency duty doctor who would have come to the house and if needed, she/he calls an ambulance and he would go to hospital - or the doctor would treat him in the home issuing mega strength anti-biotics - just the thought of finding the cash there and then. My tax and national insurance is 25% of my income, incase you're interested. REally, really glad he's OK, it must have been a scare for you. Froogs xx

Sorry to hear that he was feeling so sick. We have begun to see flu and RSV in our ICU. Winter is definitely here. Why the security guard? That makes no sense at all. They need to come to Maine. We have scary. Think Stephen King scary. LOL. Hope he is feeling better. Hydrate!

I'm glad to hear that he is doing better.... I know how bad those damn panic attacks can be. That's what ended me in the hospital in January.

Thought and prayers for a speedy recovery!!!

FQ, We have private docs that will come to your house on a retainer, but not this far out from a city. We can call an ambulance if needed, we have one about 10 minutes from here. You do not have to pay when you get there, you are billed later like any other service. We pay when we get there because we set money aside just for this.

It shouldn't scare you, it is just different.

Thank you all for your will wishes. He feels a lot better this morning.

Holy Cow!

I've been busy taking care of my new group of bunnies, building pens and whatnot, and haven't checked in for about a week....

I'm so sorry he went through that! I have been so sick that I truly thought I was dying, and can relate to how he could feel that way. Severe illness can really mess your mind up when your body feels so wrong...

Anyway, so glad he felt better and is hopefully now well on his way to feeling hale and hearty!

The same thing happened to me in January--I thought that my appendix or gall bladder were the problem and it was a virus. I know how much pain he was in and I'm glad to see that he's feeling a little better.
