Those of you that read that group blog I use to write for, know that I make my own toothpaste.
But I was thinking the other day (besides the fact that I have way too much time on my hands in the winter) what happens if I can't get glycerin?
I know, strawberries, but might not have those in the winter either. And if I am ever forced to survive in the wilderness I know how to make a tooth paste out of bark or sassafras.
So I decided to see what I an do without glycerin, just to pass the time and torture my taste-buds a bit.
I saw a recipe that has you using clay powder. Well I don't have clay on hand, that one won't work. Maybe a little charred eggplant and sea salt. . . nope I have neither of those one hand.
And I have done the peroxide thing, and must say I don't care for the after taste one bit.
2tbsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vodka
2 drops each: Oregano oil, wintergreen, peppermint
Now this is a toothpaste I could learn to love.
I can distill my own "vodka" so that wouldn't be a problem. I grow the mentioned herbs, and I have a bunch of baking soda.
Do you have your own recipe for toothpaste?

The recipe I had used peroxide, but I haven't tried it, yet, and so I don't know if I would like the taste ... although the commercial toothpaste we use is a baking soda/peroxide mix, and so I bet it would be okay with us.
Still, the idea of using vodka is intriguing, because, like you, I could distill my own vodka from potatoes that I can grow ....
Hmmm .... closing the loop. I like that ;).
I think I would be glad it didn't taste like chicken.
If you have baking soda you are set.
I'm guessing, just bcuz of the Ruskie Secret ingredient, this will be a best-seller!
Or, erm... a tasty consumable-- I mean, scouring agent (no KGB pun intended!)-- at the least!
Salinte, Lady Phelan!
Mine uses coconut oil, baking soda, and stevia powder and mint essential oil for flavor. I've been using it for a few months now with no complaints!
Baking soda, xylitol, a few drops of tea tree oil, you can add any flavoring you like, mint oils or cinnamon oils work great. I spritz my toothbrush with hydrogen peroxide (I put my peroxide in a spray bottle) then I pour on or dip into the above mixture, it works great.
