As the Homestead Turns

Today's post will be a run down of sorts. There is legitimate fears running around about TEOTWAWKI. This is not something I normally talk about, but the fears of other's is nagging at me. So many of you want to be prepared, just in case. And I don't fault anyone for feeling this way. Our own President is sending all kinds of Doom and Gloom messages, there are so many people being laid off and unable to find jobs. The unemployment and welfare systems are being over burdened, and many are feeling over whelmed and helpless.

I said on a previous post that I am not afraid of a depression, I am afraid of something else. And boy did I get jumped on for that statement. A Depression is a bad thing, it affects many people, it's sad, you lose so many things, like your home. But the depression isn't what is truly scary, it is the behavior of people that I am more fearful of. People that seem to have lost their moral compass a long time ago, people that were raised to feel that they deserve everything, people that are addicted to instant gratification, people desperate to survive.

What is that old saying? Give a man a fish and he eats for one day, teach him to fish and he will keep himself fed. Something like that? oh you get my drift. Those people that can fish, I am not worried about. They took the time to learn to do for themselves. It is like my chicken thief, the are hungry now, and instead of asking, instead of taking the time to learn, they merely take. This leads to me being angry and willing to protect my food stuff fiercely.

I digress. I am more than willing to teach any of you. This week I will give you some more sausage recipes on slow days. I have also been asked to talk about canning your own meat products. If there is something you wish to talk about, to help your mind be put slightly more to ease, please ask. I get many emails, and I don't mind those at all. I want you all to be prepared for the worst and prosperous during the rest. The media makes things sound horrible, but remember, just because it is on TV doesn't make it gospel.

Ask your questions and I will do my best to answer

Oh, and I just found out that a company in Germany has my blog labeled as porn. ha! I guess I talk too much about certain animal anatomy.

Very good post! I fully agree with teaching and sharing the knowledge of how to do things. Especially now, in such uncertain times, you never know what is coming around the bend.

I post informational articles myself, but I am eagerly awaiting yours! Everyone has their own specialities! Keep up the good work!

Phelan, I agree with your statement about people. It really isn't about the Depression. Hmm, and people got onto you about that statement? Hmmm....

There are many like this in the city. They are spoiled, they feel like they need everything YESTERDAY, but they don't know how to get it, they won't work hard, they are used to everything being CONVENIENT. So, I understand you :)

Maybe the germans have different ideas about sitting on sheep than you do?

You do get a little freaked out and freaky sometimes. I understand where you are coming from, but it can be hard to read.

Jessica, when I got your reply in email, I thought what!?! I forgot about the porn thing. But it isn't a sheep it is a goat.

I didn't think I was freaked. Today's post was just a response to the emails I have been getting. People are scared. I say you shouldn't be scared. You should have 2 plans always. Or am I totally misreading what you said?

I agree that we should all try to learn as much as we possibly can. There is no telling what tomorrow will bring. But a successful outcome is more likely if we all can be as self-sufficient as possible. I enjoy following your blog and I look forward to more informational posts.

Knowledge is the one thing a person has that no one can take away! Teaching others a way to help themselves is a good thing...and passing on knowledge is something we should start doing again, as has been done for generations up until just recently.

I enjoy your post, and I seem to learn something more often than not...so, you keep posting and I'll keep learning, my friend!

It's good stuff you got going.

I am at an advantage in these times. We have water, we know how to do without power, we know what plants and mushrooms are edible and even some medicine in the wild.

Teach! We all need to learn. We are killing Mother Earth and many do not care.

Scared? Freaked out? Yup, that's me. Insomnia has reared it's ugly head again. You know what helps? Prepping. Making a list of what we're capable of, and what we've still got to do. Taking the list and turning it into action steps. Then, DOING IT! That's what helps. And, your sage advice to prepare to either survive or thrive is good. Keeps the spirits up.

I absolutely believe that the skills I am teaching myself now "for fun" will someday in my life time become absolute necessities for my family. And that's why I'm NOT scared, because I know I'll be ready.

Umm...until they want me to make cheese. WHY does my cheese never set?? I do not have access to raw milk, but I would appreciate your thoughts on home cheesemaking.

I read your blog everyday and love it. That being said, I found out my blog was banned in China.

It's the long hot shower that did it. The porn label that is.

I agree it is a very good post, very much thought provoking. It is all about people, some people freak over the smallest thing (ie broken nail), others are at their best during times of stress.

I've only recently discovered this blog, I think it's and you are fantastic.

I hear you! For those of us who know how to live on a little, it isn't nearly so scary. (and we sometimes even think it might be a good lesson for those who don't know yet!) But I'm definitely talking as an educated person who has a bit of a buffer, not someone who was already living on the edge.

I understand what you're going through. Part of my own homesteading journey has been sparked by the sheer amount of pessimism and negativity that we get subjected to day in and day out now...

I reckon if I can at least figure out how to grow veggies, bake bread, and make poke salad, I'll be golden.

Re my previous comment:

I just have a very different view of guns and knives. I live in Long Beach, CA, home of Snoop Dogg and at least a half dozen local gangs. They're not difficult to avoid on my side of town, but virtually all public talk of weapons is intrinsically connected with organized crime and senseless, random violence. I am still learning to think of these things as tools and preparedness items.

Family friends of ours had to barricade their appliance store during the Rodney King riots with dump trucks parked on the sidewalk in front of their store. They passed on an offer (from other friends) to put a turret-mounted machine gun on the roof. I assume these friends also had someone to man the gun, but why in the world would a civilian have artillery?!!! You see my problem. I guess I really need someone to take me deer hunting and get a different perspective.

Jessica, I understand. My mother grew up in Hawthorn, and lived in downtown LA. Even back in those days guns were largerly uses for crimes. Here in the midwest however we have them for both protection and hunting. We do have some gangs and drive bys and that in the major city, but the towns are quiet.

I have heard many people talk about why guns are bad and they look down on use that do have them. I only have the one right now, and that is used to protect myself from both man and beast, but where we are moving to the beasts get larger and the men seem to disapear.

If you ever find yourself out this way, drop me a line, I would be more than happy to show you around and taking you hunting.
