All the chicks I ordered from McMurray died. So. . . I ordered through Ridgeway. I got 25 straight run Leghorns. They are a few weeks old, and looks like only 4 of them are roosters. The Bantams I ordered from McMurray are doing just fine.
Not much else to tell you about this weekend. My mother and stepfather came out. My stepfather did some welding, while my mother and I hung out. She did some crocheting and I shucked corn, lots of corn. We talked about the cows and grilled dinner outside. It was a pleasant day for being 103F outside.
I have a lot of corn to process today. Guess what the topic will be tomorrow.

We just picked 12 walmart bags of corn saturday. Bring it on...
I just got done freezing that corn. Well done if you count that I haven't cleaned up my kitchen yet. I think I like beans better than corn! :)
I've had horrible luck with chickens this year. My batch of broilers: killed by coyotes. My Americanas: also coyotes. The white rocks: most drowned in a storm when they were shut out of the barn (sr) or in the goat's water tank (never had that happen before). I still have 1 Americana and a white rock hen from the first batch. And, out of the WR second batch, I have 10/30. Eight are roosters...
I am going to try again next spring.
Corn is expensive around here this year. I am waiting for ours to ripen, but I plan to buy a few dozen as well.
I hope you do post about corn tomorrow. I would like to learn anything I can about it- I hope to have alot ripen this year but in the past I have lost all to racoons.
I also had a terrible year with chickens. Lost 9 out of twelve Cornish Cross broliers. I don't think I will try to raise them again.
I too also hope to hear about corn as this is my first year growing it...oh and about the homestead vs green...Im a mix of both but Im not perfect I love my ac, evil as it is.
Tim, wow! That's a lot of corn.
Stephanie, I am right there with you. (Heard from Marta)
Gina, I bet! With all the flooding up there. Sounds like you will have a lot of meat this year.
anonymous, I will do my best on the corn posts. Don't give up on the birds. Sometimes bad things happen, but they are worth the trouble in the end.
Stephanie, call yourself salt and nothing you do is evil ;)
