I was out in the garden earlier and realized I forgot to mention something, and it is important.
When you water your plants, you do not want to use a sprinkler. Instead you want to water at the base of your stalk. Leave the hose and allow it to soak for about 30 minutes at least every other day.
If you use a sprinkler you run the risk of damaging the fruit. Ever found a tomato that literally split at the seams? That would have been cause by water falling onto it.

Hi there, love your blog :-) Just wanted to add while you definitely want to water your tomatoes at the base to limit fungal disease, that a tomato split at the seams is usually caused by irregular watering. If the soil has been a bit dry, the skin becomes less elastic - then when the plant gets big drink, it absorbs lots of water quickly; the skin can't cope and it splits (and then the tomato rots). Cheers!
I use an old fashioned watering can every day. I let the water fall gently on the base of the plant. Is this okay?
I just found your blog. I love it!! I was Googling about turkeys and read your Thanksgiving turkey post. OMG--I laughed my butt off!
Just wanted to say that I have been growing tomatoes longer than God has :D, and "crazy mumma" is right. If the soil dries out a bit and then you water deeply, the plants take in way too much and the skin can't cope. You don't want to water too shallowly either though because then you'll encourage surface roots only. Water a good amount on a regular basis and you ought to be OK.
Thanks for a great blog!
