Poll closed

I am impressed with the amount of people that voted in the "What should I make" Poll. Maybe I should change the theme of my blog to a choose your homesteader's adventure.

Looks like with a total of 49% of the votes, I will be making cheese sometime this week. What kind of cheese, no clue. I will have to do some reading on the subject. Of course if you know something I don't, feel free to tell me so {about cheese that is}.

Thank you for your thoughts about my father. I will let you know how things are going soon.

Yum!
Cheese is always good. I could be a vegetarian but never a vegan---I love cheese. Though some of my favorites have to be aged at least 6 months---such a wait to see the "end" of a project :-)
By the way---I haven't been checking in as frequently since we have been busy. I don't know about your dad but I hope all works out well.

Hello!
Since you want to know about cheese, how about this website?
http://biology.clc.uc.edu/Fankhauser/
Cheese/Cheese.html (please note I had to add a space between Fankhauser/ and the first Cheese to make the web address fit the comment box)
I personally have not tried to make cheese, but perhaps an easy on like lebneh would be up your alley? I hope it works for you!
I also hope your Dad feels better soon.

I am a very beginner cheesemaker and found that ricotta and chevre are the easiest (Mozzarella is complicated). Riccota you can make with just cider vinegar and within minutes you have success. Chevre requires some special bacteria innoculations (see http://www.cheesemaking.com/ for chevre packets) but is done within 24 hours with minimal work. I'll send you my ricotta recipe if you want (edgwickfarm@aol.com). I use up all my extra goat milk this way and freeze the extra ricotta and chevre for later use.

Hooray for cheese! I am so excited. I just love reading about the new adventures you take on. It's very inspiring. I wish I could be more like that. Going to cheese training. If I can snag any literature on cheese making, I will send it your way. Have fun!

Cheese! I look forward to this adventure. This should be fun.

And a pack of prayers and positive vibrations for your father, Phelan. Hugs all around.

I don't know if you're familiar with this blog already:
http://bean-sprouts.blogspot.com/

Mel has at least one description up of making cheese (cream cheese I think) as well as other things like yoghurt and soap (in case you decide to do that sometime).

Yoghurt and cheese are definitely two things I'd like to make myself. I bought extra milk at the weekend to try yoghurt. Unfortunately I've been having lots of problems with the girl who moved into the house a few months ago and, although she's now moving out at the end of the month, the couple who own the house have asked me to move some of my things from the common areas so I'm not sure how I'm going to manage to do anything that takes up even more room (like preserving stuff during the summer to use in winter as obviously that'd take up space too, or having space to leave cheese to mature).

Hope your dad gets better soon.
