We have some massive projects coming up here. We have utility poles and bricks, windows, sliding glass doors and heavy front doors, all waiting to be utilized. Many of the projects have already been plotted and are just waiting for us to go. However there are a few small but tedious things that we have to finish up before going. Like this iron head sportster that the owner didn't even test ride before purchase. I loathe this bike and want it gone!
I digress.
We have to make some changes around here. The massive drought last year took its toll on us, physically, mentally and financially. I don't like struggling, and hay prices have only come down slightly. We have decided to sell off half our cattle. This is only a temporary thing. We have set in place some goals to achieve before replenishing our livestock, but for now, we are going to have enough to only feed ourselves.
Everything in our life is going to be downsized. It will be an interesting process for us. Once our goals have been met, we will reexamine things and move on from there.
I have one lofty goal that I hope to make someday, but requires money and time. If I am to ever reach that goal, then things must change.

So, do we get to know that "One Lofty Goal" or are you just going to keep us guessing?
I was just thinking again today (scary, I know) that I wouldn't be surprised if we had another drought year. First cutting at least a 1/3 less than normal and what SHOULD be the start of greening up for the second cutting is brown and crunchy. We're with you on having to downsize; the goat herd is down to a mere three and I'm even wondering if I should bother incubating more chicks. And although our new wild turkey poults are cuter than cute, I think I may be giving them away also. Too many critters to feed. I couldn't imagine having to feed cattle!
Good luck with your purging. But as long as you keep some good stock, we can always bring those numbers back. Well, at least I hope :)
I think I will keep the lofty goal to myself, just in case failure ensues. And I can tell you all about that later.
We are on our third cuttings already. However, they are still trying to recoup their losses from last year, and are still shipping it out of state. Makes it harder on us.
We have decided on what ones to keep, so the stock is diverse, and brining the numbers back up shouldn't be a problem.

Sometimes less is worth it. We've started downsizing at our place also. It is still kind of painful for Hubby but he is beginning to see the light in less stress and commitment.
I have been trying to downsize also,in terms of stuff, to begin with. It feels freer for sure!
I don't even homestead and I'm with you on the downsizing! We currently have 9 family members living here and I'm drowning in stuff. Hubby and I are starting to pare down our possessions to make things easier & create more room, although we are increasing the size of the gardens to help feed all these people. At the rate we're going there won't be anything left to can or freeze for the winter!
Lofty goals are good Phelan. Actually making a plan to achieve them is even better, so good luck with it.
