We had July weather (100+ and dry) in May and are now having May weather (mid 90's and rain) in July. We finally turned on the air but because my oldest son is stationed at Minot, he came in for a funeral and his two baby boys could not take this heat. They left about 70s weather but saw on the news this heat wave is over the entire US - even Minot. Don't think I've ever seen that.

I got tired of trying to water with a soaker hose and the well didn't seem to like it either. We drilled the tiniest hole we could in some extra buckets and give each plant a gallon or so. The hole seems a tiny bit too big but it seems to work so far. At least if it doesn't we didn't water too many weeds either.Stephanie in ARhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05117946992633230458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28663723.post-55692552811130938492011-07-13T10:10:42.331-05:002011-07-13T10:10:42.331-05:00Bob, I brought that up to Husband the other day. Of course we haven't had that 1/2inch since sometime last fall so maybe even that would not help.. Heck of a way to garden when you hope the weeds will help to hold some of the moisture long enough for the plants to get some of it. Deep dry sand just does not hold water. Dug a hole about the size of a five gallon bucket, took almost ten minutes to fill with the hose, emptied in less then three. I have tree rats, regular rats, skunks, possums, coons, and who knows what else eating my garden in addition to the grass hoppers, lizzards, horn worms, and several unknown sets of tracks. Guess I could declare this a "community" garden.Bob from Athenshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14124078025732286371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28663723.post-28790284351023891062011-07-13T08:35:34.363-05:002011-07-13T08:35:34.363-05:00glad someone enjoyed my colloquialisms. :Dglad someone enjoyed my colloquialisms. :DPhelanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08250080326099834661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28663723.post-5678467131109958892011-07-13T07:37:13.297-05:002011-07-13T07:37:13.297-05:00Frog strangler...I love that.Frog strangler...I love that.ChicagoMikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00753886754710524372noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28663723.post-49353731408953769232011-07-12T21:47:50.132-05:002011-07-12T21:47:50.132-05:00We have mulch, lots of mulch. Some homegrown is better than none & technically it is time to be planting the fall garden. We got several loads of wood chips when the power company was clearing the lines and I have been trying to get around the plants mulched. The tomatoes that got done are still moist from rain two weeks ago so it is helping. I told the kids the mulch goes on the plants first cause we can walk the paths into pavement. We go out to the garden at 6:00 pm as we are all on dh's afternoon shift hours. It cools down pretty nice but once night falls its quitting time even if I want to keep going.

Hope you get your rain - long and steady for about two days would be nice.Stephanie in ARhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05117946992633230458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28663723.post-25883779588775597252011-07-12T17:25:14.179-05:002011-07-12T17:25:14.179-05:00I can sympathize. June normally gives us over 4" of rain...we got .29" in June and none so far in July. May wasn't much better. Shrubs that have been around this house for decades are dying and watering doesn't help. It's just too hot. Johnnie had an episode of heat exhaustion a couple of weeks ago and missed an entire week of work. I kept trying to tell him that people of "a certain age" can't fool around with this kind of heat. I am so thankful that we aren't trying to deal with hay and livestock this year.TexasWrenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11300895218799650405noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28663723.post-22749255069218016852011-07-12T16:35:48.010-05:002011-07-12T16:35:48.010-05:00Now twelve days in a row at or over 100 and foreca...Now twelve days in a row at or over 100 and forecast to be the same for the next eight or nine days.
